Hi All,

New to the site & looking for advice on S2000 ?

1st a bit of background:

I am currently looking for a good looking perfomance car that is usable everyday, covering aprox 20,00 miles per anumm and suitable for ocasional track day fun

My initial shortlist was as follows:
VW Golf GTi (remapped to 250 bhp)
VW Golf R32
BMW 330i
Porsche Boxster 2.7

Whilst driving round various local Stealers pulled into my local Honda garage and really liked the look of the S2000 so it was instantly added to the above.

My concerns and the reason I discounted it initialy were concerns over practicality ( the golf clubs will definately have to fit on the passenger seat and living with a high revving engine on a day to day basis as it will be my only car.

Interested in any current owners views especially any that currently do high mileage on a day to day basis.

I have not yet road tested any of the above but hope to do so over the next month.

S2000 will probably outperform all of those on a road course. I was just at the track with an R32 that was faster than my S, but it was turbocharged and modified for the track.

Of course it is not going to be as practical as a hatchback, but it makes a fine daily driver commute vehicle. The myth of the undriveable high-revving engine is fairly silly.

One consideration is that (in the US, anyway), it is getting harder and harder to find organizations that allow you to take roadsters to the track without supplemental roll protection. And adding a roll bar to the S2000 does seriously compromise it as a daily driver.

 

My recommendations are:

1) Drive each car and decide for yourself.

2) If you have $60k to drop on a Boxster it's a great car, if you want to spend $34k you'll also have a great car AND $26k in your pocket.

3) The BMW and Volkswagons are not roadsters, so if you want a coupe or sedan you first need to make the choice between a true sportscar or a sport sedan. Once you figure that out and know how much money you want to spend you can decide which car is best for you.

 

20,000 miles is approx one set of tires a year. The tires you want on the car for driving are useless in snow, and marginal in the rain. If you need to drive in the snow, that's a separate set of winter tires and wheels. A small golf bag will fit in the trunk, but you'll need to think about your ability to live with a small car with limited practicality (but lots of fun). You can drive an AP2 in traffic happily under 3k rpm - no need to get near VTEC unless you're out to drive fast.

With regards to the type of car I have tried to pick the best performance option from 3 segments:

Hot Hatchbacks - 2 Golf's
Compact Exec saloon - BMW 3 series
Coupe/Convertables - Boxster & S2000

Nissan 350z missed out due to fuel consumption (Petrol in UK costs over $ 8.00 per gallon and rising ) also cheap interior put me off.
