Confused About CA Registration
#21
Here's my out of state buying experience. We've bought 2 Hondas in Phoenix and have registered them in Fremont, CA.
At Mesa Honda they charged us AZ sales tax, 8%, when we got to the Fremont DMV they charge the difference (.25%). The registration fee was CA entirely and was paid in CA. One word of warning, the AZ temp plates are 30 days, but CA requires you register you car within 20 days. If you make the mistake you pay a ridiculous fine (you may be able to sweet talk your way out with the DMV officer.). Smog went pretty much as redleader said. We saved probably 8k between the Prelude and the CRV by going to Phoenix. In a few weeks we'll do it again to pick up my shiny new white s2k
Automall wants 41k my dealer in Mesa MSRP
SFBA dealers who needs'em

and you know the funny thing is that these car salesmen are normal folks just like you and me, meaning, they've bought cars before too. So it makes you wonder how they can stand there and hold a straight face while they tell you that they "have to" sell the car at such a ridiculous markup, or that a spoiler, sidestrakes and cd changer justify a $9000 markup. Man, do the math and even if you add up those accessories at dealer prices with dealer shop hour prices for the install there's no way you come up with a $9000 or even $5000 markup!
