Thumbs up Comptech housing - worth $400?

Sending my diff to hardtopguy today for 4.77's......... A $400 option is to swap my (AP1) housing for a Comptech.

At this time, I plan on keeping the motor stock - certainly for this year, probably next as well...... never know about the future though - never rule out a S/C.

I will be doing track days and hitting some aggresive back road twisties. Will eventually move up to R compound rubber later in the season, I would assume.

Thoughts /recommendations / first hand experience welcomed.

Mark

IMO yes it's worth it. It addresses the biggest weak point in the diff, which is the flexing of the end caps. And considering they are already gonna have your diff apart for the gear install, might as well do it. If you were to wait and do it later it's gonna be another big labor cost, since they essentially have to reinstall the gears again into the comptech diff.

I have only heard of I think two comptech diffs that failed. I know one was heavy heavy track use (and possibly FI) and the other was a guy who was pretty much trying to destroy the diff. He was SC'd and basically beat the piss out of it til it gave in.

Since it will already be apart, get the CT piece.

just curious, and not to hijack, but do you guys know how the stock AP2 diff compares to the Comptech diff in terms of strength and durability?

the ap2 diff is not any stronger than the ap1 diff. so yes, the comptech diff is stronger.

really? weird, why does everyone always say that they revised/strengthened the diff in '04... not being sarcastic, I honestly want to know the truth on this matter.

I think the strength in the AP2 diff comes from the clutch delay valve reducing the initial impact torque that is sent to the diff. That is what I would honestly say.

$400.00 well spent,if you drive agressively, and do a few clutch dump.

while this "rumor/myth" tends to float around the forum, no one has any proof that the ap2 diff is stronger. no metallurgy has been done (in fact, how much metallurgy could be done on a diff that is mostly cast iron?) When you put them side by side, they look almost identical. the bearing caps and that area are also identical. the only noticeable change was a slight change that seems to allow for a bit better oil movement.

that said, I think the main reason you dont see failed ap2 diffs all over is because of changes like the delay valve, and the fact that the ap2 has only been out for not even half the time that the ap1 has.

meanwhile, we have the comptech diff, which to my understanding, was developed with some input from honda, to address what seems to be the main issue and point of failure in the S2000 diff.

awesome.... and I removed my CDV

well, at least I know.... and I won't be putting any vtm4 in there. seems like that didn't help the whole situation either.
