Default Coilovers

What is the difference between a "coilover" and a regular shock/spring assembly? Don't all springs "coil over" the shock assembly (in a physical sense)? I'm having trouble understanding the terminology here.

On the S2000 all suspenison is a shock inside a coil spring, but there are many other ways for a car to be sprung. Leaf springs, coil springs seperate from the shocks and torsion bar suspension are a few other types, but I doubt you'd see them on cars like the S2000.

What newguy said is correct. Also, many people use the term "coilover" in reference to threaded-body coil-over setups. In this case, the shock body has threads and the spring perch is screwed on so it can be adjusted up or down on those threads to change your ride height. This can either be done with a shock/spring combo that was designed form the get-go to work like this like a Tein coilover setup, or by adding a threaded sleeve to your existing shock - as the comptech kit does.

so I guess people use that term, "coilover" pretty loosely then huh? Sometime I ask people what kind of shock/spring set up they have and they say the have such and such "coilovers". I'm thinking, well that doesn't tell me much because all shock/spring assemblies on the s2000 are "coilovers" (in the physical sense).

Please do not bump 11 year old threads. Thank you. We also have a forum dedicated to suspension and brakes...use it: https://www.s2ki.com/s2000/forum/249-
