You have to learn to do this to pass your driving test in the UK. But then again, most cars there are manual, so it is more important to learn .....

I would have just let my car hit the other car if the clutch would not have engage. They have to leave about 1/2 a car length. It wouldn't be your fault he would have to answer anyway why he was so close to your rear. That why I don't care if a car behind all close so be it I get a new rear bumper. Don't be scared it would be minor damage anyway if that occur and would teach him a lesson.
