I was out there for business one time and I had a hell of a time starting out on the hills out there in my rental car and it was a freakin' automatic!!! It was some POS grand prix and on the steep hills it would roll back quite a bit when I was starting on hills. If I gave it more gas and held the brake longer, then it would start spinning the front wheels. Pretty frustrating knowing that if it had a manual transmission I would have been able to do a better job.

You have to learn to do this to pass your driving test in the UK. But then again, most cars there are manual, so it is more important to learn .....

I would have just let my car hit the other car if the clutch would not have engage. They have to leave about 1/2 a car length. It wouldn't be your fault he would have to answer anyway why he was so close to your rear. That why I don't care if a car behind all close so be it I get a new rear bumper. Don't be scared it would be minor damage anyway if that occur and would teach him a lesson.
