You can back off the throttle a bit to get a slide under control, but any abrupt weight shifts (by totally backing out of the throttle) will throw off the handling. Think about it this way - if you let off the throttle, the car will be engine braking. This will lighten the rear end and take away from grip/allow the rear to slide more. Sometimes it even helps to ease into the throttle a bit to recover a slide, just because of the weight transfer to the rear wheels.

That makes perfect sense - though there's likely a greater impact in lower gears and higher RPMS where the engine braking is more prevalent. Thanks for the upgrade comments. It's been a while since I drove something with this kind of power/weight ratio and I want to be sure I'm being smart.... Thanks.

as soon as i exited from the interstate, the light changed yellow...i dropped it in 2nd gear going maybe 40mph, vtec'd, slow'd down to maybe 20-30mph, took a hard 90 degree left turn. Lost my rear end, tried to correct it, but accidently i let off the gas pedal completely. i didn't spin, but was left in the middle of the road facing the oncoming traffic (there's a big curb median). that was an embarassing 180.
