Checking Oil during break-in period....questions..help
My s2000 has right at 500 miles on it and it is now on it's third tank of gas. I have check the oil with every fill up but it has not needed oil.... Is it supposed to need oil? When it does need oil how much do you usually need to add? I have a quarter of mobil one sitting in the trunk just in case but the dipstick says everything is fine..... Also, is checking the oil with every fillup only during the break-in period? Please advise..

Is the Mobile 1 synthetic... don't use synthetic oil until 10000 miles. I have noticed that the oil usage after V-Tec'ng and hard driving. And yes you should check your oil at every fill up (to 10000 miles), it's a good habit to get into.

no, it's not synthetic...it's 10W30....
When have you had to add oil though? That's the bigger question. I read some threads somewhere about these things being oil hungry or something.

Mike,
A couple of things that I have learned recently:
Whether or not your car burns oil will depend on your car and how you drive it. Don't be suprised if you do not burn oil - that's not a bad thing. The more you are in V-Tech range, the more you will burn.
When you check the oil, let the car sit for a few minutes before checking it or else you may get a false low reading. Someone back me up here, but I believe 1 X on the dip stick is one quart.
Also, do not use Mobil One yet. The car has special break-in oil in it currently and Honda recommends not using break-in oil until xxxx miles (says in manual - I think 6 or 7K). If you need to add oil, add standard oil. This is because synthetic is thin and will not help the rings to settle in the engine.
If any of this is wrong, someone please correct me. I'm still learning more and mroe about this car everyday.

I'm at 3100 miles and have used no oil. Manual says to change at 3750. I will change to a regular oil at that change and then at 7500 I will go to Mobil-1 synthetic. All of the X's on the stick is one quart - approx. Half way down the X area is 1/2 qt low. If you're not racing you shouldn't burn much oil. If you run oil level high and corner hard to one side (I forget which side), there is oil that get's into combustion chambers and smoke results. That has been discussed on this forum.
I'm an easy driver. Probably get my engine above 6K once per 100 miles or so - jumping on the freeway. Some temptations just can't be resisted
