Default Check Engine - Gas Cap

2002 S2000 with about 25,000 miles, the other day check engine light came on and check and gas cap was loose. Tightened it and light has stayed on. Manual says can take three trips to turn off. Been more than that. What to do?

take it to autozone and have them pull your code... could be something else ?

Unless you have the code pulled, you have no way to know that the problem was the gas cap.

All 02s have this problem. Hold the gas cap around the edges and tighten it, you will probably start to hear it click but keep turning until you feel it get suction and then when you hear 3 clicks it's fine. I had this happen to me within a week of getting my s2000 and I couldn't believe that I got a CEL. I pulled the code at autozone and then checked on here and it was that exact problem. I talked to the previous owner and he had to do the same thing. There is a TSB for the fuel filler neck but you are out of warranty so you would just have to hope that Honda would do a goodwill repair for you.

Get a new filler neck. The problem is that the threads are messed up. (This applies to all 2002 cars and the early 2003 cars. Also some CR-Vs and Insights.) Honda may do the TSB for free, especially if you are the original owner.

If you have any mechanical skills at all, replacing the filler neck is actually quite easy. So if they won't do it for free, it's still a good idea to buy the new filler neck and replace it yourself.

It's TSB 04-002.

I say give it a little more time. I had this situation and believed something wrong when the light stayed on but it did finally go out after a couple of days. No trouble since.

Yes, that's the routine answer. However, when I see the question being posed by somebody with a 2002, I tend to suspect the fuel filler neck problem.

This morning when the light was still on, decided to bring it in at noon .... well, lo and behold, In started it up and after a short while it went out and has not come back on. If happens again, then will check and see if it is the filler neck problem.

Thanks for the help
