I guess I should be happy to have learned about auto politics while in my 20's

dlq04, Only things I would say different are that the oil pump in the tranny is supposed to provide lubrication under all G-loads (it doesn't) and that a light weight flywheel is not attached to the input shaft while shifting so it would not alleviate the grind.

A good explanation is that Honda tried to shoot for high RPM shifting AND light shift effort. I believe the spring rings had a tendency to blow past the ramped teeth that exert pressure on the synchro rings, not even letting them do the work. Stiffer springs and or thicker springs would fix the grind problem but increase the shift resistance.

Although Woodworks' explanation was good and detailed, for those who had grinding gearboxes(at any RPM) it sounded like an excuse.

Interesting timing, bringing this thread up to the top. American Honda is sending Woodwork to Sac2KDays II to answer our questions about the S2000, and he'll possibly be making a presentation. Cool!! Thanks, Woodwork!!

I like the tranny for fast driving it pretty much perfect. Although for drag racing it's basically a piece of shit. The syncros should be able to handle what the car needs.

I have a question......may sound stupid but oh well....is it true that some of the early '02 models still had the problematic tranny? If so.....i think i do....2002 #854 ans built in October of 2001!!!

It is the design.. except for the revision of the parts (in 2000) to minimize the problem there has been no substantial change to the gearbox. Some have great tolerances and others don't and they grind. You can try getting Honda to fix it but most give up and either live with it or trade it off.

Wow, thanks for the bump "da hapa" and thanks a lot to woodwork for the original post! It's good to there's someone at honda who cares to at least educate us. It's really appreciated!

My 02's (built December 01) tranny is getting worst every day. When new it was perfect once the car warmed up. Now, I get the 1-2 grind, bump against something (that feels like metal) during 2-3 shift. Also at times during high rpm 1-2 shifts it seems like I've moved the lever all the way down to the 2nd gear position but I get the feeling I missed the gear so I have to depress the clutch right away instead of completing the shift and shift back in neutral and try again - this gets scary at times!

There's one more issue that I've taken up with the dealerhisp but they say it's normal. When the car's in neutral, stopped, press the clutch all the way in and give it some gass (to around 4K rpm), it feels like some metal objects are grinding really bad - you can hear and feel it. Is this really is normal?

I'm not happy at all, I have never abused the car and it's at 20K miles now. I'm going to try a tranny oil change and see if it helps.

My clutch is very rattly too when it is disengaged, but I hear it is normal. It hasn't gotten better or worse in the 25K I've had it.

what exactly is the 1-2 grind?

is it the hesitation of going into 2nd gear? (cause its not smooth for me and i have a 2002)

or is it that sometimes it doesnt fully pop in 2nd gear which will cause grinding when trying to accelerate??
