Default In-Car Sports Camera Options for various duties?

So the other day I was chatting with a buddy about camera's in the car and he mentioned it's nice to have one on the dash ready to go for various reasons. I was thinking of a camera for surveillance and he was saying it uses it for both track duty and occasional road rage from crazy drivers....

Anyways I know about the Hero GoPro camera but he recommended this one from Contour:

What do you guys recommend?

I prefer a camera that will keep recording and automatically erase old footage that is no longer used or needed. I know a lot of you are track junkies so what camera do you guys use for the best recording and playback?

Thinking down the road, this might come in handy for recording my daughter during sports activities so the smaller and more durable the better and in that aspect I like the Contour more.

TIA

In all honesty, I own a Drift Innovation HD720 and i love it.

It is very water resistant out of the box
has a 360 degree rotation lense
comes with a remote
shoots in 720p at 60fps
the mounts are very sturdy(no stupid screws like the GoPro)

I would defiantly look into the DRIFT line of cameras. The HD720 in this case is one of the cheaper models.

Not bashing on other action cameras thought! ive used GoPros to coach people in there racecars =D

also check out the HD POV? i think is the brand.

Sony Actioncam works pretty well.
You can use your cell phone as the view screen via wifi....and it's cheap.
I'm just mad at sony because the underwater casing leaked at 90 feet deep.

You do not screw the mounts for the GoPro into your car... I have a GoPro and it uses adhesive to stick to the car. Where did you get that type of information?

You either want a sportcam OR a blackbox dashcam. There is no one camera that does both well. A blackbox style dashcam will do FIFO recording. A sportcam won't. The sportcam will record until it runs out of space (or battery power), then it stops. Dashcam is powered by your car. Dashcam is always on. Turns on with the car, turns off with the car (or if configured to do so provided the power is set up correctly, it can also record when it sees motion when you are away from the car). A sportcam must be manually turned on and off and you have to remember to do so.

Can't advise you on the sport cam.

There are many choices on blackbox style dashcams. Depends on your needs. I have two different types. The BlackVue DR500GW-HD is very nice. There are other less expensive models which are also quite nice, but again, it depends on your needs.

Best of luck in your research.

Sorry i dont refer to the mount itself, they use the 3M adhesive tape which is awesome. I mean the rotating joints that use the special screw I hate those damn things.

Ooooh ok. I'm going to have to check into the camera that you use. I might get one to test which one works better. Thanks

The drifts use a similar clip-in mount like the GoPro but all the rotation is done on the camera itself with a toothed gear. Then you can rotate the main lense to square the shot.
