1. Vanity plates are for grannies and Corvette owners.
Really??? I have personalized plates and I am neither. Oh, wait, this is California...they are now Environmental plates...

What I have done in the distant past is to flash the emergency lights for a second. They think I'm hitting the brake. I'm not. They hit theirs, I keep going and I DO get 150 yards ahead!!

For what it's worth, I always slow down a little when someone tailgates me aggressively, especially when I'm in a right lane. This is strictly a safety mechanism. The more closely someone tailgates me, regardless of reason or circumstance, the more distance I want between myself and the person in front of me.

Bottom line, I have better brakes than the pickup truck tailgating me, and I really like my car. I don't want it to get rear-ended. I can't predict what's going to happen in front of me. So if someone's hugging my rear bumper and I no longer feel comfortable about having enough room in front of me to brake slowly enough to compensate for the tailgater behind me, then I am going to slow down a little (5mph at most) and get some extra open space in front of me. My biggest worry is the jerk behind me interpreting this as me trying to piss them off. Believe me, the last thing I want to do is piss off an incompetant driver who probably already is angry about the existence of my car in his or her path. But, at the end of the day, my safety and my car are more important to me than the personal feelings of the person behind me. If they want to get in front, they can change to the passing lane and do so.

This pisses me off.

1. You are dumb.
2. 150 yds is 1.5 football fields away. You think that'll happen in city traffic?
3. I guarantee that I can "bait" you into hitting the back of my Land Rover and you'll be crying.
4. Why propagate evil?
5. I can be spraying my lawn with fertilizer and "accidentally" mist your car with sh!t... not illegal, but is it courteous?
6. Weren't you the one crying about being nailed by the letter of the law by a ticket on Halloween... now you're advocating being a d!ck because it's "not against the law?" You can't have it both ways.
7. BTW, it is against the law to drive "recklessly" even if you're above 45mph.
8. Did I mention you are dumb?
9. Typical "not my fault" mentality... even when it is.
10. Did you know there is an insurance scam where people in beaters slam on their brakes at random times, baiting people into hitting them and collecting the money? Say you're at a stoplight, it turns green and the car in front guns it. You follow and they slam on their brakes 2 seconds later... you're going into their taillights...

Unless you wait until they're 150 yards away before you start moving....
I thought not.
1. And the reason is?

2. The poster clearly stated that it happened on the freeway, not in city traffic.

3. I won't be whining a bit since it was my fault for following a vehicle too close, especially an SUV. I drive like a senior citizens for a reason on the road.

4. I'm not propagating any evilness, I'm just stating some facts. If the car infront of you brakes hard, no matter how abrupt it was, you will be to blame. My friend learnt it in a hard way.

5. There is nothing illegal about it, but you will be liable for any damage, just as if your house next to me blew up and caused fire on mine.

6. I was complaining about the ticket because I have received the ticket without violating any law. If I did something that was wrong that is clearly stated (such as having an aftermarket exhaust and making noise, or it was done in order to be a menace in the neighbor or for a show) I would have paid full cash at the site.

7. Braking abruptly is not considered 'reckless' unless it was done intentionally. I have never suggested anywhere that you should brake infront of a tailgater to annoy them or 'bait' them into paying damages. It could happen by the front vehicle hitting a box that fell off a truck that was infront of that vehicle, the vehicle failed, an insect stung the driver, the driver saw an apparation on the road. Whatever it is, if it causes the car behind the driver to crash into him, it will be the rear vehicle's fault according to the traffic law. I didn't make it, the citizens in this country voted for it.

8. Explain the reason for your questioning of my intelligence.

9. I did not blame anything on anyone and I don't care who's fault it is, I just mentioned how the law would apply.

10. If you gun it from a stoplight, you are violating the law, just like the driver in the beater. If you get 'baited' in such matter, you deserve it. Also there are people called 'lawyers' you can hire. If you can't hire better lawyer than the lowbie people who's only way for quick bucks is to bait people into crashing their car, then I'm sorry, but you are a sad human being or a very unlucky one.

I didn't mean to measure and follow exactly 100-150 yards but trying to get people the idea to drive far enough so no matter what happens to the car infront of you, you will be easily able to evade any accidents from it. Here's a site I have found after browsing around a bit:

http://www.dot.wisconsin.gov/safety/motori.../tailgating.htm

It applies to Wisconsin so it might be a little different in your state. It is advised that you give about 2-4 seconds of distance depending on the driving condition. If you calculate, it comes out to be around 65-130 yards if you are travelling at 70mph. Sorry I was a bit off but you know what I was trying to get to.

Legally, they are both wrong

WayneTeK was speeding 70mph on a freeway? (so 55mph is the limit right? unless you are talking about an interstate, which is most likely 65mph since there are very limited amount of 75mph roads)

The other guy was:

- Also speeding

- Tailgating

- Had intention to speed even more

But seriously, at that speed, even if he was on the left lane, he does not need to give way to a car behind since he was going at or faster than the speed limit.

I say don't sweat it. If action had been taken, you would have probably been pulled over.
