Can the odometer be tampered with?
Going to purchase a 2000 S2000. Its an original 1 owner car and is claimed to have only 17,000 original miles.
But has recently had a new set of tires installed.
Just wondering if its possible to pull a fuse or something to not clock up milage? Anything else i should look for? I am new to S2000 were there any known recalls or problems with the first year cars?
Thanks

If it is from a private party, then it is not likely the odometer had be tampered. If it is from a used card dealer, then it is hard to say. Pull a carfax to learn more details of the car before buying it.

Tires on this car are soft and it's reasonable to need replacement at 17K, the rears will wear twice as fast as fronts but at 20k it's time for replacement. With a stock alignment the insides or all 4 will wear very fast. Do a car fax. lots of people only drive these as a weekend toy or a summer car. Enjoy

i'm very curious as to how these digital odometers can be tampered with. while i was working at a VW service department, one of the technicians incorrectly entered the odometer reading on the replacement gauge cluster. he had to re-order a new gauge cluster because it only allowed one attempt to enter the mileage.

They can't be tampered with. You'd need the dealership to be able to change the mileage, and even then, it doesn't always work, and they end up having to put a sticker in the car stating the mileage is incorrect.
The only way you can change the mileage on this car is by swapping out the entire instrument cluster with an instrument cluster that has less mileage. not all that easy of a task.

In e36 BMWs, the digital od is mirrored to the ecu, and also to an undisclosed 3rd location. The only way to change the mileage on those cars is to change all three pieces of equipment. Isn't there a similar design (redundancy) in our S2000s?
