S2-Raw, wait about ten years and you'll begin to understand what those guys meant.
The S is a great handling car and with great handling comes some sacrafice to ride quality. I wouldn't say the S is abusive or untolerable for daily driving, but when compared with cars like the Z4 or the TT, the ride would be relatively harsher.

Some of you guys are just never going to give it up are you? I saw the show was coming on just before it started so I threw in a tape and recorded it. I've watched the S2k portion a number of times now just to see the footage of the car on the track . They never once said the car was "softened". What they did say was that as it was, the car was not a good daily driver for most people. They said that the car had undergone a number of minor changes so that it was now much "improved" for those that use the car for things other than just the track. They made a specific point to say that the new car gave up *nothing* in performance to achieve this result. The one editor they taped from inside the car as he was piloting it around the track said that to him the previous car was just great as it was, but that the "improvements" made it even a little bit better. Their contention was that the main improvement was the increase in low/mid range pull and better traction.

Well there it is in black and white. They did not say it was too much of a sports car. They said it was to pure of a sports car. Not to nitpick but to me there's a big difference. I also watched the segment again this morning before I left for work and I think your quote may be off a little because I believe they said it was to intense for daily driving which given the context of what they were saying meant to me the lack of refinement in ride quality, mechanical noise levels/vibrations, and the relative lack of low end power which required high revving during everyday traffic driving. It's definitely not worth arguing over though .
BTW, I paraphrased a bit myself when I said that they made special mention of the car giving up nothing in performance to gain the refinement. What they actually said was that even with the changes, the new car was every bit as fun to drive as the previous models. So I'm guilty too

I've been dying for this car for 4 years... since it first arrived in dealerships in 99.. and have been eyeing over the differences and was looking at the new '04 and decided that the '03 is the one i wanted to take home, because of it being a 'raw' sports car... that what i wanted and i love it... i've already done a lot of driving in a comfortable 'soft' car.. in the Lexus SC430 and i didn't get anywhere near the enjoyment out of driving that as i do with the s2000.
Yeah baby!
