buying used s2k and found weird results from CARFAX
Hello,
I went to inspect a used s2000 today and was happy to report that it looked to be in great condition.
Car looked clean and had low miles for an '01 which was excellent. Also, the owner stated that he was the 2nd owner of the vehicle, which was fine.
But I ran a CarFax report and the results are somewhat interesting. The report stated 5 prior owners and "Inconsistent Odometer Reading Found."
I spoke to him on the phone after running the report to discuss my results from CarFax. Apparently, he said that he knew the owner personally and the reason for the many shifts of ownership was that the original owner had left the country so his family was left with the responsibility of taking ownership of the car. In essence, the ownership was being "passed around" in between family members.
As far as the odometer is concerned:
Reading reported on 03/26/2001: 10 miles
Reading reported on 01/30/2003: 26,790 miles
Inconsistent reading on 01/30/2003: 17,915 miles
Reading reported on 06/05/2003: 18,333 miles
Reading reported on 07/18/2003: 18,334 miles
Reading reported on 10/06/2003: 18,388 miles
Could this be a clerical error made by DMV? Is it even possible to rollback the odometer on the s2k?
I really do like the car and seriously considering the purchase, but I am a little wary about its history. What do you guys think?
Thanks in advance for the replies.

If they bought a new ECU or dash, teh odo would be different. I would definately question it. If they did roll it back, then they ahve something to hide. It could have been an easy misprint.

I told the guy that if I bought the car, we would have to take it down to a Honda dealership to have the car inspected before I signed the papers and he agreed to have it done. Is there a possible way to tell of an odo rollback (perhaps DTC? but DTCs can be cleared.... hmm)? Perhaps I should go to a body shop to get it checked out as well.
Would you still purchase even if the honda techs and the body shop gave a thumbs up?
The asking price is very good, but I believe what you pay for is what you get and perhaps this was too good to be true. I'm beginning to lean away from this deal.

You bring a valid point about the mile gain in a month and a half. Hope the car wasn't just sitting there for that period of time. Or who knows.
Thanks for all the info, I think I am going to just say NO (the s2000 is the best drug ).
I'm sure there will be some good deals in the future. But until then, I'm going to daydream heavily.
Thanks for all the good stuff and I'll keep you guys posted.

SO I guess the deal would have to be REALLY good, remember if you ever sell it you've lost value because of the inconsistent OD. Make your bid price based upon this. Remember you are making a BIG investment. My rule is if it doesn't feel right I walk away. You have to decide what is comfortable to you. To me there is enough inconsistent with the stories that I would be concerned what else was done or happened to it.
What is the offer price since that we'll also help people decide if you are getting a good deal?

I wouldn't take it... ODO readings too funky. 1 mile in a month and a half? You have to drive it farther than a mile to get to the MVD... unless they don't have to check out the car when switching titles.
I know what it's like though... having something you really want... you want to just take the leap and get it.
I would shy away from this one though.
