purple,
I have a huge bottle of it that teflon protection I bought from the commodore salesman. He drives around and supplies dealers. Not sure where in Va you are but, if your near Va I'll help you put a coat on for free or get you in touch with the salesman. You'll just need to meet up with him at one of his stops. It actually goes on very easy and works well. The bottle that will do 100 cars was only $25 or so.

The gap insurance is a must on any new car. My last car got stolen about three months ago. I would have had to pay about 5K out of pocket if I wouldn't have had a gap policy on the car. It's well worth the $600 or whatever it costs.
Umm GAP is a complete waiste unless your paying over sticker for a new car like a Z06 when they first came out or Shelby GT500.

If you buy your car right you should never be upside down and in need of GAP. If you need GAP you got riped off on your car.

No that's not true. My insurance company did not offer me what I paid for the car when it was stolen. This would be true if it was totalled as well. I had just bought my car about 4 months before it was stolen. I don't care how good a deal you get your insurance company is not going to give you what you paid for the car when you bought it unless you pay for that kind of coverage.
Cars depreciate faster than you pay them off in almost all cases.

Gap insurance is intended to pay off your loan in case your car is totalled or stolen and is worth less than the loan balance. But I would not buy gap insurance from a car dealer, any more than I would buy a car from an insurance company. If you are buying "no down payment" of a very small down payment, it is a good idea to get it -- just shop around for it. Perhaps your car insurance company offers it.

Here's another way to go. A few insurance companies will pay the price you paid for a totalled or stolen car for the first year or 15K miles. Depanding on circumstances, that might take care of the problem.

You are assuming that the car will be upside-down during the term of the loan.

Gap insurance is only needed if the car's value is going to be less than the amount owed at any point in time. And even then the risk needs to be weight against of cost.

EDIT: Crap! I didn't keep reading before I responded.

This is a valid point. And you are correct. If you go in with no money down then the amount you owe could outweigh what your insurance co. pays you in the case your car is stolen or totalled very early into your ownership. I have heard of this being beneficial for leased cars as well.

In 2004, I sold my 1998 GTI VR6 to a friend for $6,500.oo He had it for around 2 months, was struck from behind and the car was totalled. State Farm gave him $9k for the car!

On a really "new" car however, it can certainly work the other way. I wonder if it varies because of the insurance co or if it is always this way.

Once again. If you need GAP you got screwed on your car. Its as plain and simple as that.

Or your insurance company is trying to screw you. That has nothing to do with GAP though.

Some days I think everyone on here is a inexperienced in the real world 16 year old kid from LA. Yea you got to have GAP other wise you'll get screwed. Blah Blah. You have to pay sticker thats what the nice car salesmen said, I know he wouldnt lie.

Oh xviper I know why you left.

Believe it or not. When the insurance company says we will only give you X dollars for your totaled car. You can say no I want Y dollars. 9 times out of ten you will get it.

Seems like lots of you have lots to learn.

I love how they tell you "you never have to wax your car agian!" You just apply this creamy white stuff twice a year that goes over the entire car. Then, you let it haze up and you wipe it off....
