Thumbs up Building the Head

I have an S2000 with 114,000Miles on it and its due for a rebuild. I have a few questions about building the head.

- First off, will a VAFC II be good enough to provide enough air/fuel for a Stage 2 cam?

- I wanted to go Brian Crower for my cams but everyone says no, what cams should I use then? ( $,$$T,ODA,$$$ )

- Also, what brand of valves, springs, and retainers should I go with?

- Then I am getting a port and polish.

NA heads require some special tricks to flow well and make power. Who is porting and polishing the head. If they are good they will have a preference for certain valves, springs, etc.

No cams have been shown to make significan power to date. Vafc is a bandaid. To unleash the power get an AEM EMS or other powerful EMS.

There are several major brands of springs and valves that can be used. I would suggest the titanium retainers.

Definately walk away from anyone that says you don't need new valve guides.

You can increase flow on the head...my buddy has a flowjet machine and measured the before and after, and it definitely helped the AP1 head.

That said, I have no clue if that resulted in more power. You would think so, if you had an EMS.

I think titanium retainers and springs would be a good upgrade over stock. The AP1 retainers are weak. I don't know if I would port and polish or flowjet it if you don't plan on running an EMS and/or don't wanna spend the time/money tuning it.

I agree that no one has proven cams to make good power. For the price of cams you can probably do other things first that will make more of a difference.

Why do you say it's due for a rebuild? If there something wrong with it or do you just want to improve it? I can't imagine that engine is anywhere close to needing maintenance in the way your speaking.

I do believe you should change out titanium retainers every 20k-35k miles, depending on how you drive, check me on that.

What is wrong with Crower cams? The family has been in the cam bussiness for decades. My father used Crower Cams back in the 70's in his Ford sandrail with excellent results.

Crower is one of the few US cam manufacturers that has part numbers for the F20/22.
