Toyota MR2 has a clutch-less tranny, as SinD pointed out called Tip-Tronic or some such term. You need to shift, but there's no clutch. I think I read here that the racing vehicles also use that technology. I don't think SinD was throwing any barbs other than saying if you don't want to use the clutch, maybe that type tranny is for you. But I don't want to try to read too much into any one's posts--it seems to make people GET KINDA HOSTILE!

Damage will come to the actual gear tips if the shift lever is forced into the next gate. This grinding can result in lots of small metal chips floating around in the oil which only helps to wear everything quicker or a larger piece that might actually break off and damage other gears in a bigger more abrupt way.
If the driver does not have a gentle hand and has tendencies toward impatient behaviors, this is not a recommended method of changing gears.
As I mentioned before, I do this occasionally, not as a general practice.
I wonder if the mechanic taking the S2000 out for a drive was more interested in impressing the owner. I would not suggest this practice for everyday driving.

TTSupra,
which dealership did you take your S to service? How do you rate them?
I have had the thumping noise into first since I bought the car back in Nov of 2000. Thumping might be too strong of a word to describe it. At a stop light if put it in first I will hear this noise. If i put it back into neurtral, without releasing the clutch, and once again put it into first I won't hear this noise. But if i put it in neutral and release the clutch and once again put it in the first the noise will come back. This can be repeated everytime. I have always assumed this is normal.

And TTSUPRA, I'm so glad you did not ask me why I do do it with the motorcycle so often!
I guess that is partly because the tranny is so much lighter and the shift is so much easier. If I have my foot just gently resting under the pedal (1st is down from N, and 2nd > 6th are up from N) not really pulling up on the foot peg and I come off the throttle, it just pops itself into the next gear, and then the handlebar gets the big twist.
Oh, and I would like to mention my bike is an '85 Honda Nighthawk 650, with yes that is right 49,000 miles. And as much as I love 9,000 red and 6 speeds, I still prefer 11,500 red and 6 speeds!

i get the same noise.. at first it sounds like you stalled the S or something.. but rpms are normal, no strange behavior...
also, i've noticed that if i do not "ride" the clutch in 1st from a dead stop until it reaches about 2000 RPM or so (say in attempt to "quietly" start to move), i get a really strange nasty sound until the motor reaches 2000rpm or so. it's a sound I cant really describe. anyone else experience this?
