Default Break in speed?

I know you are not supposed to vtec until 600+ miles and not pass 5500 rpms.
But how fast can i drive the car?
I didn't go over 70, but was wondering what speeds you guys have driven.
Under those 600 miles.

If you keep the engine speed below the required limit, drive as fast as you like or dare.

If I remember right, the recommendation is to vary your speeds often and keep it under 70.

Its not about speed in breaking in, it is about RPM and load on the engine. Just keep it under ~5.5k rpm and you should be fine. Try not to put load on the engine too. like having the rpm too low and hitting the gas. and like monkeymaker said..vary your speeds because that will vary your RPMs.

the speed doesn't matter, its the rpm you're at. stay below 5500 rpm at all costs. when on the freeway, don't use cruise control and try to change your speed. like go from 50 to 60 to 70, then slow down, go faster again...etc. also, a very good thing for your motor is to go on an empty freeway, put it in 6th gear, take the car up to 5500 rpm and immediately let go off the gas. the car will slow down due to the engine(engine braking) and this helps the rings in your motor.

I have 300 miles on my s2k and was wondering the same thing...

Does it matter if the car is in 6th, 5th, or any other gear when going from 5500 and down (engine braking)?

Should I just drive around doing this for the next 300 miles? Hey if it means putting in 30 minutes here and there to get it done right I'll do it!

my recollection is that i drove up to 105 (6th gear) while under 5500 while breaking the car in. the rpms are important, not the car speed.
you dont want to rev over the 5500 while downshifting either.

yeah i drove it for a little bit today and did
what you guys suggested
except the accidental shift from 5th to 2nd
but rpms didn't go pass 5k
at least i didn't see it pass 5k
was only like high 28's when i shifted in

This is most likely THE NUMBER ONE reason for a mechanical over-rev that has destroyed more than one engine as reported here and on other car forums.
For the sake of your car, please take the time to understand how your gear shifter was designed. The spring that holds the stick at that particular position is there for a reason. When no side to side pressure is put on the stick, it is perfectly centered in the 3-4 gate. If you are trying to select gear #3 or #4, let the spring do its job and allow it to center the stick before putting it into the slot. Don't try to "guess" where the 3-4 gate is (the spring knows where it is). Only if you are looking for the 1-2 gate do you apply lateral pressure on the stick and then, it is to the left as far as it will go. Only if you are looking for the 5-6 gate do you apply lateral pressure on the stick and then, it is to the right as far as it will go. USE THE SPRING! LET IT DO WHAT IT WAS PUT THERE TO DO!
