Default Brake calipers

Is it necessary to powder coat brake calipers or can you just spray paint them? And if you can just spray paint them why the hell would people pay 300 bucks to have them powder coated?

Well i have spray painted calipers on my other cars, and as long as you use high temp paint they should last, maybe people just dont realize it, or are too lazy.

I spray painted mine with high-temp black paint and am pleased with the results. It has lasted quite a long time.
I also painted the brake rotors so they don't oxidize when they get wet. [Not the part where the brake pads touch.]

thanks, I guess that solves that problem. as long as you can paint them thats all I cared about. even if it only lasts a year or whatever you can always paint them again

if you're looking for some high quality caliper paint, head to decalgirl.com and look for the G2 paint.

I used the Follia Tec kit on my car and was pleased with the results. I suppose the powder coated calipers are more durable than those painted with G2, Follia T. or high temp paint. I guess if you have money burning a hole in your pocket (which I don't) get them powder coated.

Here are results from G2 from DecalGirl. It is about $40 for the kit.

Scott,

That looks nice. Tell us more about the kit. How long did it take you to do it. Could a novice do the job?

The nice part about the G2 kit is you do not HAVE to take off your calipers to do a good job. Since it is a brush on kit, if you mask off all of the areas you do not want to paint you can still make them look really nice w/o having to spend the time on taking off your calipers. If you do a search on here someone did a really nice write up on tips for painting your calipers. If you want to do a good job expect to spend about 2-3 hours. The only downside to the G2 kit is the drying/hardening process takes a long time. I wasn't able to drive my car for about 20 hours. I believe the kit even suggests letting it sit for 24.
