I finally got around to calling TireRack and find out what's available for Michelle. The guy suggested a set of Blizzak MZ-01, or going for the LM-22 if I was going to be more aggressive.

While I don't plan on driving aggressively during the winter months (I rarely do during the summer months), I don't want to lose much nimbleness unless I have to.

As the temp has been dropping (40's) I can break Michelle's back end loose with a bit of juice (stock tires).

Anyone care to share their views on these tire sets, or maybe suggest some others?

My $0.02 would say invest in four good jack stands and a beater with a heater.

Hey, it was snowing (sort of) today.

I was planning to use Nokian NRW 205/55/16s all around last year but the lack of snow allowed me to wait.

The LM 22s look interesting but I have not seen any reviews.

No way would I go with a Q rated tire like the 01s.

I asked my local tire dealer, Advanced Tire in Cambridge, MA to research the LM 22 but have not heard anything yet.

At this point I would prefer to stick with stock sizing as I do not really expect to drive the car in real snow.

The stock tires are poor when cold and scary when crossing the trolley tracks on Beacon St.

sorry to change the topic... but...
hey clutchcargo, did I see you today on Rt.9 eastbound in Brookline today (blk s2k)? and MacGyver did I see you on Rt.9 also but westbound in Natick around 4 (silver s2k)... It was just weird seeing 2 S2k's in the same day and it wasn't a rally!

g,

'Twas not me. Since my friend moved from the Brookline area out to Acton, I have no real need to head down Rt 9. Now you're more likely to catch me on 117 between Waltham and Maynard.

IMHO, forget the Blizzaks, go with Michelin Pilot Alpins. I have used snow tires religiously for the past 30 years or so (I grew up in Ottawa, Canada - best year was 1971/72, with 174" of snow), so I've learned a thing or two over the years.

To make a long story short, two years ago, I purchased Michelin Arctic Alpins (siblings to the Pilot Alpins) for our Chrysler Minivan. Last January (1999) I drove through the worst snowstorm in recent memory (>24" of snow) from Ann Arbor, Michigan back home to Toronto; 100% of the travel was over unplowed highways. The Michelins were head and shoulders better than ANY other snow tire I've ever used. They're better on ice; better on snow; better in the wet. They're also the quietest, most durable snow tires I've ever used.

Sorry about the commercial, but they really are great.
