The best reason to use 10W30 is that the viscosity remains more stable over time.

If I lived further north, and/or parked outside I would consider switching to 5W30.

5W30 should not give better mileage than 10W30, unless you make all your trips less than about 5 miles. Which is really bad for the engine and exhaust anyway.

Could be other factors. Best to average over several tankfulls before and after the switch, doing same driving and the same temperatures.

Cars get worse mileage in the summer (A/C) and in the winter (long warm ups).
