Default better gas mileage

Just changed from 10W30 to 5W30, amazingly I've driven 300kms and still got 7 bars left!
I used to get only a little over 300kms or 350 the max with a full tank of gas...

Out of curiosity, did you also change to synthetic?

This is what the Mobil 1 5w-30 synthetic oil bottle states:

" Mobil 1 5W-30 provides superior fuel economy compared to SAE 10W-30 grades"

Also states:

" Mobil 1 5W-30 is factory fill in all chevrolet Corvettes"

Sounds good to me - I have a case of Mobil 1 5w-30 from a previous car. If I'm not mistaken, the first number (5) indicats a lower cold viscocity, so better economy at start up only (short trips). The engine is somewhat less protected though.

I was recently at a Honda Dealer "new car owners seminar". One of the tech reps made the comment that the reason that Honda and other auto manufacturers recommend 5W30 oil is for better fuel economy. It seems the difference between 5W30 and 10W30 in terms of mileage is significant.

...But in the case of the S2000, is it worth the risk? Is there even a risk of engine damage my switching to a slightly lower weight oil?

If you live in a climate that rarely gets near freezing, stick with 10W30. In our part of the world, where we're hovering around freezing every day now and will get to -25*C soon enough, a 5W30 will flow better on start up and get the oil to where it's needed faster. So what do you want? A slightly thinner oil in the cold that gets to those critical parts faster or a slightly thicker oil that might take a bit longer to get to those critical parts. Remember, a cold start is the worse wear and tear your engine will have on a routine basis. Once it's warmed up, both will have more or less the same viscosity and more or less the same protection. When one has to deal with extreme cold, there is more to think about than simple fuel economy.
