Woody's right....Even if you erased the memory....at 10,700 rpm there will be nice little "smiley face" impressions of your valves on your pistons...Not to mention the pieces of engine you can find in your rear-view mirror...I'm guessing thats why the "spike" is only recorded to 10,500 rpm...Anything much higher than that is a no-brainer for Honda and the mechanic who tears down your engine....

Interesting information ... so the process at this point would be for City Hunter to get the dealer to agree that when they take apart the engine and find no problems with the valve stems nor any smiley face imprints on the cylinders, they will pay for it???

BUT, what if there was no overrev but a legimate problem with the engine that caused the valve stem problem and the smiley face pistons???

I wrecked an engine in my old accord when I didn't change the timing belt and it broke doing 65MPH. What a mess. Yes, this is driver fault, but what if the belt was defective?

my point is that Honda has the upper hand here and it will take City Hunter quite a while, if ever, to get Honda to pay up.

He should keep taking his complaint higher and higher within Honda until he gets satisfaction. This is the frustrating part of owning cars.

Lets go back to horse and buggy!! (just kidding)

I agree he should exhaust all levels of possible recourse...But AHM's response is all too predictable...Driver Error...

Hey Golfnut....I've been to the USGA headquarters in your neighborhood there...pretty neat...Particularly the (6-iron....? collapsible...) used on the moon.....

BOTTOM LINE:
1. there is no over rev memory. just a snapshot that is taken when the CEL light comes on.
2. I never over reved my engine and honda NEVER handed me any proof otherwise.
3. I paid 3500 bucks to get a new long block and install...

If you really want honda to pay take your engine out of hondas hands. Pay to have it replaced at a non-honda shop. Send the components to be tested by a failure analisys company then go to court with absolute proof.

I agree with airsport. That might be the only way to go. Again, Honda (as with most companies) simply hope you go away if they drag it out long enough. If you push hard enough and long enough, you might get what you want. Also, subliminal messages about going to court may help you out as well. Tell them you are willing to swear under oath in court that you did not overrev the engine. You never know, but it might help.

Getting an independent shop to analyze the components and then go to court may be your best ( and last) bet. This method means you have to have the money upfront to do this. Honda is betting you don't (or can't or won't). Talk to a failure analysis place first and see what they say. (I didn't know there were such places till this thread. I've got to remember that. Hopefully I never have to use one for something like this).

Morgan - I've been to the USGA headquarters twice with my sons golf team. It is a neat place if you are an avid golfer like me. I am having golf withdrawals with all this snow. I gotta move to the warm weather states. Wish I had a swing like Iron Byron.

Brought the car to Honda this morning, but they won't have time to look at it until tomorrow.

Like golfnut311 said, if there's no impression on the valve, is AHM going to cover warranty? I certainly hope they won't come with other excuses to avoid warranty.

When my CEL first came on, it was right when I started the engine. I mentioned this to the Honda service guy, and he explained that when you overreved the engine, it might take a while for CEL to come on. Does that make any sense???

airsport mentioned that a snapshot was taken when CEL came on, I am not sure exactly how that works, but since CEL first came on, the light went on/off by itself quite a few times. Does each new snapshot replace the previous one stored?

I don't know about the "snap shot" other than what I was told... I would think that it would update everytime the CEL comes on?

I ran a data logger that had the last weeks worth of driving and still was screwed...

Now the engine is opened up, here's a photo of the valve

According to the tech, the circled area is not sealed (a bent valve), that is why the pressure on cylinder 3 is lower than others. When he put a flashlight in there, we could see lights coming through the gap.

I have the high-res photo here http://members.dslextreme.com/users/cityhu...er/IMG_1646.JPG

I'm no mechanic, so does this look like something caused by overrev?? (I'm 100% sure the engine was not overreved, or I missed a downshift) I am just puzzled on how I could get a bent valve under normal driving condition?? Since it proves Honda's theory that it's a bent valve, I am afraid that they'll just refuse to cover this repair under warranty.

I am still waiting for a decision from their distrct service manager.
