Automobile: Z4 is better than S2000!
#11
Actually.. The Z4 (looks) Kinda grows on you after a while, like all of Bangle's creations. Sure, the 745iL isn't as sexy as the old style, but at first, the 745iL looks like a piece of shiz. Then as you get accustomed to the style, it doesn't look all that bad. First I thought the Z4 was the ugliest car on the market, but as you see more on the road, more real life pics, it grows on you.
The S2000 styling is a completely different story. It's LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT

Heh...here's a direct quote of the very first line of that Automobile article: "Don't let pictures fool you: The BMW Z4 looks better on film than it does in the flesh."
They go ahead and mention that the Z4 is easier to drive at the limit than the S. So what? They don't say whether or not those limits are higher than the S and I'm betting they would have if that were the case.
Bottom line, it's an ugly car that carries a premium price because of the badge on it's hood. It may handle well and have a decent engine, but at $45,000 for the 3.0i (who the hell would get one of these in the 2.5 liter model except a poser) it should. Is it $15,000 better than the S? Not for my money, especially when you factor in that they will sell 40,000 or more of these hideous things a year.

It may indeed be a far better driver's car than the Z3. But I'll make the following prediction: decent first year sales, then a flop compared to the popular Z3. Too much competition, too expensive, too ugly. The few its looks appeal to will buy it. The majority, who may have bought a less polarizing design, will not.
Yes, I agree that Roundel sells cars all on its own. But face it, BMW does build very nice driver's cars. This one will be hurt by the styling.

Bottom line is still the bottom line. Even if the Z4 3.0 were the equivalent or even slightly superior to the S2000. You'd have to ask yourself "But is it $12,000 better than an S2000?" The answer is always a resounding NO!! Ditto for Porsche Boxster "S" as well. I'd love to own a Boxster "S" But for $52,000 it ain't gonna happen. There's a certain sense of satisfaction that you get knowing that you didn't spend several thousand dollars essentially for a name.
