For some time, I've been having a problem shifting into first gear, from the neutral position - usually when I'm stopped in traffic, or at stop lights. The symptoms are that about 15% of the time, either I have to "crunch" into first gear, or the shift lever just refuses to go into gear; when that happens, the only way to get it into gear is to de-clutch and try again - then it'll shift into gear with no problem (until the next time).

I can easily duplicate this problem by repeatedly de-clutching and then trying to shift. If I do this, the frequency of being locked out of gear increases to about 25%. (BTW. This only happens with the engine running - which makes sense.)

I took it to the Honda service department today and showed them the problem. The mechanic promised to call the tech staff at American Honda. If they've heard of it before, they'll have it on record, and know what the fix is.

I was wondering if this is a unique problem, or is more widespread - perhaps even worthy of a TSB.

Is anyone else experiencing this problem, or had anything done to fix it?

 

Yes, I have had this problem for at least the last 8 months or so. I have had the car since 10/99. I thought I was the only one. My symptoms are exactly what you describe. I have never had a tech look at it.

Plus I am afraid to have some dealership hack dig into the transmission for a minor problem.

Not presently owning an S2K, I suggest checking the clutch linkage. If hydraulic, then look for leaks in the tubing, or cylinders. Or the presence of air. If the problem gets worse the longer you hold the pedal down this is an obvious cause.

Synthetic trans fluid also eases cold shifting(Amsoil Synthetic comes to mind). You could also try this, it is very good stuff for hot and cold use.

Same problem here, except that it has never crunched before. Sometimes it just refuses to go into 1st, then I'll clutch again and it will go just fine

 

I think it's a common problem and not really a problem. Mine has always done it (all 3500 miles anyway) and both of the other two S2000's I've driven have also been this way.

 

This is a problem with more manual transmission. Not necessarily into first gear but mainly into first. The simple solution is to release and step on the clutch again. When i first went to school to learn to drive stick back in the day this was one of the first things they taught me.
