Another oil question

Default Another oil question

I have a MY 07 and it is approaching 5000 miles (around 4800 currently). The oil life % is currently at 30% on the indicator. After reading what seems like hundreds of "which oil" threads, I still have a question that I have not found the answer. I will be changing to a fully synthetic oil. However, it appears to be a concensus that one should not go fully synthetic until 10,000 miles. Hence, when I have the first oil change, as indicated due by the oil life indicator, which oil should I use before switching to fully synthetic. I can get Honda oil, but it will require about a 70 mile roundtrip. So, waiting for my 10,000 miles before going fully synthetic, which oil, besides Honda oil would you recommend? I know to use 10w30 regardless and I have the Honda 15400-pcx-004 filter. Thanks for any suggestions.

Any decent quailty 10W-30 dino oil is fine. Havoline GF4 is a fave of our resident tribologist RoadRage. Read all about it in the Oil Journals thread in the Under the Hood forum.

BTW, "Honda" oil is just Mobil Drive Clean 10W-30 apparently. Nothing special. Dealers typically sell it but don't actually use it.

If you want synthetic oil...

Off the shelf - Mobil 1
High End - Amsoil.

There is no point of running anything else.

Personally I think these caviets about running dyno for 10K miles is a throwback to days of looser tolerances in engine building. MB ships cars from the factory with synthetic. I believe Ferrari does the same although I can't find a source to back that up.

From reading all the oil discussions and Roadrage's extensive insightful posts, the lesson you should come away with is that S2000 owners run all brands and types of oil and no one has any issues. If anything, the only thing I'd recommend is stay with dino oil and save yourself some money.

Any oil will do. I always ran Castrol in all my cars. I run Mobil1 in the S2000

get a honda filter, run 10w30 dino oil (i like castrol myself) till you reach 10k, then switch to synthetic after. fwiw, i never change my oil based on what the oil life gauge says.

Get a 10W-30 synthetic blend. A "mid-point" between regular and full-syn to a few thousand miles.

I think that was an issue with the early S2000s. I'm not sure which years, but I believe the early (or all?) AP1 manuals stated not to use synthetic until 10K. I switched to synth at the first oil change around 5200 miles on my 2006 and don't burn any oil. But it wouldn't hurt to stay with dino oil until 10K, even if the manual doesn't specify it.

If you don't track the car and plan on 3K miles oil changes after the first one, many dino oils will give you more than enough protection, as many ppl already mentioned. I track the car once in a while, so I stay with synthetic and longer change intervals.
