Default Another ECU Question

Hey everyone... I searched like mad and read through 3 pages of threads, but I can't find the exact answer I am looking for.
My car has the basic NA and cooling mods. The VAFC is designed for exactly what I have. However, I am looking into the JDM ECUs, from the likes of Mugen, Spoon, J's etc.
These ECUs are known to give a little power, yada yada.
I know Spoon and maybe J's are "chips" while Mugen is the entire ECU. Can any of these ECUs work with the VAFC? Or is there even a reason for that?
I know the ECUs are meant to be driven with higher octane fuel, but they seem pretty common, so can they also be driven with the premium here in the US (92 octane)?
I was thinking of getting maybe a Mugen ECU for, but then adjusting the A/F with the VAFC. Would that work, or is it necessary? And just making sure - but the Mugen ECU removes the rev limiter and knock sensor, correct? So I know to be careful with the revs, but what about knocking? Could that cause a problem, especially when designed for a different octane? Ahh, so much information. Any help will be appreciated! TIA!
And if there is another post like this, please point me in that direction. I couldn't find solid sources for my questions.

Thanks a lot, that gave me most of the info I need.
So the VAFC cannot piggy back the Mugen ECU, and they will do similar things but in different ways. I think VAFC would be the way to go for me in terms of gain, tunability, price, and safety. Thanks a lot for that link.

on the + side the mugen ecu doesnt use the secondary 02 sensor so you can run a testpipe with no issues whatsoever
