Air filter lid off

Not in terms of airflow, but you are sucking in hotter air with the lid off and hot air has less oxygen and our cars run rich at WOT, so that's how it loses power with the lid off.

As far as I can tell by looking at mine the K&N FIPK has a sealed airbox if you follow the assembly instructions and fit the foam around the edges. The intake air comes from the front of the car, the same place as the OEM box, not from under the hood.
The FIPK is worth it (to me) for the induction sound alone and dyno tests posted on some sites indicate a small increase in peak power. Almost any aftermarket exhaust will drown out the intake sound, though.

I am in my 40S too. The sound of th air induction cannot be described in words. Actually, I really like the idea of the lid off because the choice of putting the lid back is always there and it only takes less than 10 seconds to get it done. If I choose the aftermarket intake route, it is kinda point of no return.

I have a Fujita F5 on mine, and it sounds great. It used to be really popular years ago, and wasn't cheap. I can't find them anymore, but if you want a great sound, you can't go wrong.
I would not leave the airbox off if it were me. CAI are not difficult to install. I've had mine on for 7+ years.
