air box
#1
ok guys, this topic comes from something that i thought of when reading about the mesh airbox cover. i calculated that the s2000 moves 630 cubic feet of air per minute through the engine at redline. what i'm getting at is that all that must be sucked in through the small 5 x 3 inch opening in the airbox. has anyone tried running their s2k with the lid off the airbox? did you see any performance gains? i know for sure it sounds sweet (except for the annoying medium pitch hum at idle...???).
also, i think that any power loss by the warm air being sucked in is greatly offset by the easier breathing. somebody out there gives this a shot, and see if it if i'm simply full of it, or shear genius.

Heffeme, Yes, I currently run the car with the box cover off, as do several others on this and the H-A board. It is so hard to tell about power gains, but by the seat of the pants you definately are not losing anything, if anything you feel like you are going faster just by the way it sounds. I would be intersted for someone to dyno this.

a while ago i posted some results from a dyno, and it boils down to this:
my then invention of using a larger, more free flowing intake and a custom adaptor made only 3lbs of torque and 2-3HPs at mid rage, no changes at 9K. the owner (whose name and shop is mentioned often in Import Tuner) pointed out that the numbers might just be noise, and can't really be trusted.
the car loses 1~2lbs of torque at mid rage and roughly 1-2HPs with the top off.
the car loses ~4HP at 9K with NO FILTER, so using a filter actually helps.
that was a $100 lesson i care not to repeat again, but y'all get it for free.
i'm sure that if we were driving in the low 40F temperature the car would run REALLY well.

I am using the Spoon intake on my car. In s2k #2 9now since departed), I ran with the cover on. I now run with the cover off on s2k #2. I have not dynoed it yet, but I did take each to the track. The best ET I got with the cover on S2k #1 (which also had a spoon flywheel) was 14.00@100.0mph. With teh cover off on S2k#2 (stock flywheel) I netted a 13.92@100.7. 60 foot times were 2.0 and 1.98 respectively. same track, air temps were much arner with S2k #2 (75 plus degrees, compared to 50 degrees with S2k #1.
not scientific I know, but IMHO, with a decent aftermarket filter, I think cover off works just fine.
And the sound is rather nice.......
And I prefer Golden Grahams to Fruit loops........
and that's all
