accidentally pressed starter button too long

i accidentally pressed my started button too long and it made some funny grinding noises...what is that grind? it wasnt too bad maybe 1 second or so but is there any permanent damage done?

I notice a grind if I turn the egnition on too long in my other cars. I wonder if it's the same thing.

That's the same sound you would hear if you tried to start other cars while the engine was already running. I've heard it's not a good thing if you do it too much.

it's the starter grinding it's gears away on the fly wheel teeth....

just like hold the keys too long on other cars.

Nothing is grinding. The solenoid is holding the starter motor gear teeth on the flywheel and the starter motor is spinning freely. The noise is just because the gear teeth are running faster than normal and there's "backlash" since the starter is not loaded. It's the same gear backlash noise you can get from the transmission when you're decellerating. You won't hurt anything unless you do it for ages.

But if you let go, then press it again it does nothing, I didn't notice if I kept holding it it would continue once the car fires. See, you learn something new every day!

The starter button isn't deactivated when the engine is running!
