Its not a defect...just a function built into the car.
Running the AC de-humidifies the air that comes into the cabin, which helps the defrosting process.

Try this,

To deactivate automatic a/c feature on 2002 CR-V:

1) Turn vehicle off.
2) Turn fan knob off.
3) Turn temperature knob all the way to the left (blue area).
4) Turn vent knob to panel only setting (next to max a/c).
5) Hold down both air recirculation button and a/c button while starting car.
6) Continue holding for 7 seconds until air recirculation button stops flashing.

To reactivate automatic a/c feature on 2002 CR-V:

1) Turn vehicle off.
2) Turn fan knob off.
3) Turn temperature knob all the way to the left (blue area).
4) Turn vent knob all the way to the right (defrost position).
5) Hold down both air recirculation button and a/c button while starting car.
6) Continue holding for 7 seconds until air recirculation button stops flashing.
7) After the 7 seconds described in step 6, the recirculation button will start to flash. Continue to hold the button for another 7 seconds. After this, the a/c light will turn to green and it's finished!

Although this write up is based on a Honda CRV it also works for the S2000. I've done it twice so far. If you in any case dis-connect your battery terminal, you'll have to go through the process again.

Honestly ... I sometimes wonder how the heck people can figure these things out. I mean, that's like one of those up + down + A + B + B then wait for 2 seconds then hit L + R hacks that people figure out with Nintendo and Playstation games ...

This is why I love this board so much. There are things and info here that I would never be able to figure out in my lifetime ...

Anyways, it's a feature. I disabled mine as well, but actually never used it -- i.e. I never use those vents unless I turn the A/C on to defrost.

Those "codes" are designed from the factory. You can find them all out by looking into the appropriate documents (for example, a dealership service manual would contain a lot of them).

@ Contra code, man that brings back memories. That code actually worked on quite a few other Kanami games.

Exactly! I think lots of people get confused by this '02 and '03 mod. The change does not mean the AC never comes on when you select defrost, it just means you now have the manual ability to turn the silly thing off. I have been doing this for years and years as I have to redo it every spring when I put the battery back in. Works great, fantastic mod!
