It's probably a bigger deal on the 00-03 cars, as they tend to have more of an oil consumption issue.
Mine's an 02.

When doing your own 7.5k service dont forget to do the caliper slides for the brakes. Also if u do take it to the dealership they usually try to sell the 7.5kp service which comes with a few other things with the main thing being that u get your tires balanced.

It's probably a bigger deal on the 00-03 cars, as they tend to have more of an oil consumption issue.
the FRM cylinder walls not being allowed to break in properly has less to do with oil consumption and more so to do with overall engine life. it's just as much an issue on the 04-05 as it is the 00-03.

i dont know the explicit details, but can only recite to you information i've read in the UTH forums. if you change it too early, it may not break-in properly, I assume to mean that it has to do with the piston rings sealing properly as well as the FRM cylinder walls smoothing out.

change the oil too soon, and you could shorten your engine's lifespan. it's a precautionary thing.

FWIW, there was even a TSB on a previous generation prelude that also had FRM walls. It was a TSB stating that they should not use synthetic oil until before 10k or so. That's right from honda. The reason there is not a similar TSB on the S2k is because honda says not to change the factory oil til 7500 miles, so they assume their advice is being followed. As it should be, after all, they are the engineers who built this car.

My situation is kind of weird though. I'm not looking at the actual service manual now, but I believe it recommended 7500 miles OR one year. My car had 4100 miles on it when I bought it, but it's 3 years old and I don't think the oil had ever been changed, so I changed it. I guess I should've changed it with regular 10w-30.

Right, when you changed it out you should have used regular.

like i said, don't lose sleep at night about it. you made it to 5000 which is still a pretty good amount of running hours for the engine. don't sweat it.

Well, if that is indeed the case, I'll never own this car long enough to know the results

only get your oil changed. dont do a "7500 mile service". it's just a rip off from the dealership.

and don't change to synthetic yet. wait til 10k.

I am in the same boat as you. I have about 3500 miles and am coming upon the one year mark. I have done quite a bit of research, on and off this board, and have read the entire "Oil Journals". I will be changing the oil at the year mark, but with Castrol GTX. From what I have read, this has the highest content of what we are seeking, molybdenum.

Feel free to let me know if I am missing something, I am not completely confident with what I will be doing!
