the reason you do not use synthetic before 10k, is because synthetic may not work properly/efficiently on our FRM cylinder walls. (they take much longer to wear-in/break-in than the rest of the engine) doubtful it would cause immediate damage, but can shorten the life of the engine.
Uh-oh. I didn't know that and switched to synthetic at 5000 miles just like I have with all my other engines, including the ones I have built myself. Why do these "FRM" cylinder walls need more break-in time?

Also, changing your oil every 3000 miles is a waste of resources and your money. Even conventional oil can wait a good 5k. A decent synthetic can take you to 7500+.
Oil change interval should be determined by mileage and/or time. If your driving style is in severse conditions: mostly short trips of 5 miles or less, or dusty roads, or ... , then you should change your conventional oil at 3750 miles or 6 months whichever comes first.

the material simply takes longer to smooth out and break-in properly. 5k probably isn't detrimental. honda recommends 7500. most on the forums say 10k.

If that were the case then shouldn't we be driving the cars easy until 7500 miles as well?

After a few months of S2K ownership, my dealer sent a letter reminding me of the approaching "7500 mile service". Attached to the letter was a coupon for a "complimentary vehicle safety inspection" (NOT to be confused with STATE INSP...) and my favorite- "complimentary tire rotation".

I cannot begin to express the peace of mind I have knowing that my Honda dealer inspected my car for "safety" and that my tires have been properly "rotated".

I usually just use my right foot to accomplish "tire rotation".

Well the car was 3 yrs old with only 4100 miles and I don't believe the oil had ever been changed on it. So I figured it needed to be done and I switched to Mobil1 10w-30 at 5000miles. Should I be too worried? Anything I should do now?

I switched to Mobil 1 at 3,750 miles (approx). I've never burned any measureable amount of oil (and I was/am fully aware of Honda's recommendation of a 10k mile minimum before synthetic).

It's probably a bigger deal on the 00-03 cars, as they tend to have more of an oil consumption issue.
