By the book then and now. I broke the baby in perfectly and treat her like she is specail. I read every page of the manual on the cars I buy and I stick to the rules. I find it best and you enjoy know it takes care of you because you take care of the car. My S2000 is an extended family member. I check the oil every fillup and it is changed right on schedule.

Be kind to the beast - the dividends will pay off.

Definitely. Under 6000 rpm with no full throttle acceleration and minimal fixed engine speeds (e.g. no freeway droning) for first 600 miles. Then gradual bursts in engine speed and progressive throttle from 600-1000 miles, and finally sustained full throttle acceleration at 1000 miles. At 3500 miles it has burned less than 1/4 quart oil and runs flawlessly.

I tried to do the same as Tram 57. 6K Really is enough for a car with which one is unfamiliar.

Having said that, I did 7K at about 400 miles while overtaking, & again about 500 miles, because it felt good!

At 600, I was coming off a motorway to a town for a conference. However, once it was warmed up on the way back....WooHoo!

Follow Honda's recommendations to 600; after that it's your choice how soon you wake her up. To repeat what others have said, check the oil level with every gas fill up - no matter how many miles.

Somewhere between 400-500 mi. I couldn't stand it any more and touched into VTEC (maybe 7000 RPM) "just for a taste of the forbidden fruit".

It was sooo delicious, I had to take one or two similar tastes befor my 1st 9000 RPM romp when my jaw fell to my lap.

I believe that the break-in period is just to prevent us from screaming off the lot and VTECING like mad which would obviously be bad for the engine.

I believe the little tastes are harmless, however; If Honda where to "give us an inch" and say we could occaisionally do it, there would be abuse as we might tend to "take a mile".

haha, I vteced 3 or 4 times on the test drive

So I guess the answer is no. I also didn't get the advice from the dealer and I didn't spend the time reading the entire manual until later. I wish the dealer had told me.

I did know that you were supposed to take it easy on the engine until 600 miles, but I didn't know of the recommendation to keep the RPM's low all the time. To me, taking it easy meant not driving in the 7500+ RPM range for more than a few seconds. I think I vteced maybe 10 to 12 times while the mileage was low. I wouldn't have had I known.

The good news is that the engine seems ok- so our engines are pretty tough from the factory. It doesn't use oil (and didn't use oil during the breakin period either) so I believe my rings have seated well. It also still seems pretty powerful, so I guess I'm just lucky.
