CHECK THE OIL OFTEN FOR THE FIRST FIVE THOUSAND MILES!

I recommend you follow the break-in BECAUSE every once in a while someone on this board loses his engine for no apparent reason. Nobody can prove it has anything to do with either the engine oil level or the break-in. However, if you are the one in a hundred or one in a thousand who has to get a short block replacement, how would you feel knowing you "cheated" on the break-in recommendation.

600 miles in NOT a magic number. The manual says 600 miles or 1,000 km. 1000 km equals 621 miles.

My '93 Prelude VTEC's manual also had a 600 mile (1,000 km) break-in. I suspect a Honda manual writer pulled 1,000 km out of the air as a round number and it got rounded again to 600 miles for the English measurement market.

The manual recommends checking the engine oil at every gasoline fill-up. I recommend you do it and then do it AGAIN the very next time the oil is cold.

It just so happened that I hit 600 miles on Xmas, and I figured it'd be a nice Xmas present to myself, so I let it rip!

I waited till 600 and then let her rip. Oh the joy!!!!! Check your oil often, I have 1886 miles now and have added almost 2 quarts. My baby loves her oil.

Raced a camaro to VTEC after my 600 mile mark. Couldn't resist. VTEC-land is heaven.

I did follow it and it was the hardest four days ever!!! I haven't burnt a DROP of oil to date -- almost worries me.

Since about 623 miles, I have been VTECing my heart out -- the first time, I was getting harrassed by some punks in an older 5.0 Mustang on my way to Ocean City. They came up and were riding my ass HARD -- while drinking beers! I pull over into the right lane, slow down to about 70 and let them ride up on the side of me -- downshifted and left them on the side of the road!!! They pulled up and were shaking there heads in disbelief and giving me the thumbs up.

Just wait until you experience it...

I think it is a small price to pay for peace of mind. I followed the "rules", but there is nothing special about 601 vs 600 miles...

I redlined the car right off the lot, and throught the break in period and I suspect there was one test drive on the car befor I drove it. I now have about 8500 miles, differential was replaced under warranty, did the tsbs and it runs like a dream. Still burns some oil, about a quart every 2,000 miles but I tend to vtec alot. There are absolutely no leaks/drips around the head (I have heard this is common) and the car seems real fast with just the jr filter mod.

I kept shifting at the speeds recommended for best fuel economy (15/25/40/47/52) for the first 600 miles, and then took it to 5,500 rpm for the next 400. The manual says 600, but the dealer said 1,000, so I'd rather be safe than sorry. Opened up the VTEC at like 1,006, though!
