Default at 600 do you....

a. full throttle to 9k
b. continue to break-in, but drive more aggressively
c. too anal about your car, still keep it under 6k, no full throttle

i'll probably hit the 600 mile mark this week...so i'm thinking, what should i do? i mean it's not like at 600 there's a magic switch.

At 600 I tried out vtec, you know, just to make sure. It worked. Did it some more. But I don't go crazy, there aren't really that many places one can go that fast. With a couple thousand miles, I have yet to come up with a reason to hit the rev limiter.

I did a few vtec.
Maybe 1k more revs each week.
I think i did a lot more after 1k miles.

choice B. for me.

i kept the rpm under 5500 rpm for 600 miles. at 610 miles i engaged vtec but only up to 7k rpm. slowly and slowly i increased my "mental revlimit" by a couple hundred rpm. at ~2700 miles now, i usually engage vtec maybe once or twice a day and i still haven't hit red line yet. the highest i've gone up to is 8500 rpm. babying the motor is not a good thing with this engine, you need to fully exercise this engine to properly breakin and seat the oil rings. compression braking helps a lot(do lots of downshifting and don't ride the brakes a lot). be sure to wait an additional 5-10 minutes after you get 3 bars on the temp gauge to give time for the engine oil to fully warm up to operating specs.

also since you're going to be using vtec more often, the engine will burn more oil(the vtec system needs oil pressure to engage the metal pins at high RPMs, oil pressure pushes a metal pin through the valve rockers and the follower) and you need to check your oil level like every other day or so. waiting for every gas fillup doesnt cut it for me, some f20c's out there burn oil like crazy and it can be too late by the time u check the oil at the next gas fillup session.

good luck.

I think running our cars at under 5500 rpm is pretty hard already compared to other car engines.
I mean some probably redline at 6500rpm.
So it is still good break in procedure by honda.
I have tacked it to 9k a little bit after 1k miles.
I figure exercise the whole rpm so the car would be in shock or break when it hit those
rpms if i misshifted.

I have heard similar things from my buddies that race. All engines need some pressure to set the seals in properly. I really dunno what to think. Maybe we should be asking an editor at a major publication for some in depth feedback. I remember when I first got the 2nd Generation Integra. The salesman telling me to keep it under 70 for the first 600mi, but lengthen the times in each gear, or that is the way it will run forever. "You will have to shift in the middle of your long left turns." Well, I already have 2600+ miles on mine, so I guess don't have to worry about it any longer. Took a nice drive through Mullholand Drive today. Had a guy in a SRT4 trying to keep up, then heard a big shriek and no longer in rearview mirrors until the bottom stop light. What a blast, just wished it had traction control. I remember taking the Mini Cooper there also with the "DSP" and having it grip real hard. Also, it being front wheel drive is also a bit reassuring. The Z06 was the most fun through Mullholand with it Traction, Stability, and Yaw control, absolutely bitchin....

Well, stay safe.

Choice 'a' for me. At 633 miles I pulled in behind a Z06 that had blown by me. I have averaged going into VTEC 3 to 8 times a day since then. I personally think AHM corp. was playing it safe by giving us a 600 mile break in. I have 4825 miles on the O. D. and my oil level never drops.
