Recently I posted and help a fellow member out and told him where to buy the Gears at a very cheap price. Since then I have gotten a lot of PMs asking for the part number and the info so here it is. I was on the internet and I came across a some information about of rear diff. I research it more and I found out it is the same diff Mazda uses in their Miata, older Rx-7 and newer Rx-8. Therefore we can use the same ring and pinion set offered in those cars. Through mazda we can buy the 44.4 and the 4.77 and a few others. I can not tell you how strong they are because they are a higher ratio and sometimes they can be a bit weaker. I know the gears can be bought for under $320.00USD. Another company that offers the gears is Kia but only in certain models. I do not mean to hurt anyones business but I feel parts for the S2000 are priced high enough and with this being known as the best bang for your buck mod I believe this informantion should be avalible to everyone. If you chose to purchase the gears from these companies I suggest you purchase the OEM Gear install kit from Honda.


Mods if there is any rule I am breaking by posting this please remove it. I am not a vendor and I do not intend on selling anything I just want to help out the community.

That is true that it is old news to some. But there are alot of newer S2000s and new owners who do not know this info.

Heh, that's good info for me, and I'm a pretty new S2k owner (just coming up to a month now!).

This is just for the ring gear, right? Does the pinion gear always have to be changed too?

Here's what I've gathered so far, from reading the forums. Please, anyone jump in to correct:

4.10 - stock

4.44 - available from J's, Mazda or Motor Klasse (motorklasse.com) but perhaps they are all just Mazda to begin with - ~$380 from Motor Klasse

4.56 - Rick's by Richmond, custom
4.56r - as above, but revised slightly to eliminate some gear whine(?)
-both ~$570 from Rick's or other S2k aftermarket businesses

4.77 - available from Kia or Motor Klasse, but perhaps all just Kia to begin with? - ~$380 from Motor Klasse

I'm guessing there's also stuff available from other Japanese tuners, but it probably gets expensive really quickly.

I just checked the price for the 4.77 from kiaparts.com and they are asking $320 for the set. Then I am sure the shipping is another $20 at least. There is a GB from a board sponsor for $330 shiped on that same product now, I feel we are gettign a good deal here based soley on this comparison. I am going to call a Kia dealer though and see what they can offer, maybe it'll be lower and no shipping either since they are local.

EDIT: I just called the dealer and they wanted almost $500. I am going to order it from the board sponsor at that price!

I would be interested in how much the Mazda 4.44 is going for.

Very generally, the lower the gear number, the taller the gear and the bigger the gear number, the shorter the gear.

Low gear number / tall gear equals relatively poorer accleration, but high top speed. Big gear number / shorter gear equals much better acceleration, but lower top speed.

But these are all final drive numbers, the gears in the 'pumpkin', the rear end, to use domestic parlance.

I see you have an '05. My understanding is that AP2s have different gearbox internals (but I don't know the details), so the effect of these aftermarket final drives will be different between earlier cars and later cars.

It's all relative. If I remember right, a lot of Mustangs came with 3.73s or something like that. Do you have a PS2 and Gran Turismo 3 or 4? Try mucking around with the gear ratios and you can see what's what quite vividly.
