4.77 gear help
#21
I have seen from other posts that it depends on the installer you choose. If you can get the hook up from someone you know it will be cheap. I think Mocky paid around 350.00 for his to get installed by reading his post.

Ok, so I'm a total newbie when it comes to installing gears. I plan on getting a set new in box..the 4.77's. Do I need to get anything else for the install... i.e. bearings, ring or pinion gear? Or from what i've read, it seems as if it is just interchangable. Don't flame me too bad for asking these questions

I've seen a varying set of install opinions and would certainly love a better explanation. Some say $160 for the install others say $450 for the install. Some buy the shim kits and others don't. Since I know you need the new shim, are people just having the mechanics provide the appropriate shim or what?
I'm all about this mod when people talk about getting the gears for $260 and getting them installed for $200 or less if you remove the diff. Then a bunch of other people start talking about expensive install kits and $300-$400 install prices and the price almost doubles to about $900-$1000 instead of less than $500.
Which is it? I know shop prices vary but not that much.

The install kit should run you around $110, which include inner and outter pinion bearings, pinion nut , distance piece (crush collar)and pinion seal. The shim kit is needed to set the gears up but in some cases is not needed since the exsisting shim will be used.
