30 MPG S2000!

Tire selection and alignment have a lot to do with MPG on this car. If you're running extreme performance tires in maxed sizes and an aggressive alignment, it will knock 20-30% off your MPG compared to normal summer tires in stock sizes and stock alignment.
Stock AP2 can get into sixth gear by ~35 MPH or so, and it can do really well on mileage if you shift up that early. I'm also impressed by how little mileage is hurt by climbing mountain passes.

I have to chuckle when I see some come after you when you simply share a gas mileage experience; the same thing happened to me on another site years ago in my early years.
I have an 04 since April 2010.
I drive daily throughout the year, using winter tires, and get an avg of 25 mpg for the year, every year. I drive 15 miles to work.
I get 28 mpg on the highway, but rarely get an opportunity to do so.
I did get 30 mpg 1 time going 50-65 mph b/c of construction, so I kept my foot out of Vtec just to see what it would do.
I keep my tires at 32 psi, and use Michelin A/S tires.
I use Vtec every time I drive it except driving to work in the am when I'm still asleep.

I generally drive at or under 3k RPMs, usually under unless in 5-6th gear. I only gas up at Shell. And I generally go speed limit on the streets, and 62-75 MPH freeway. I notice if I drive at 62 MPH my gas survives a bit longer. Also I pumped the air in my tires to about 45-50 psi which is either max or recommended, I forget which but probably max. These are all the things I consciously do in order to save gas. But I don't think doing just this would give me 30 MPG! I have no mods on my car, just a Quick release steering wheel.
Any ideas on what I'm doing right? Or is it everything I just stated?!
If you are looking for high MPG... prolly need to go to a hard top. Roof down = lots of air turbulence, but very high FAF (female attraction factor). Ragtop up = not the greatest slipstream.
I would not ride on 45-50 PSI. These car are very sensitive to a few PSI air difference. At least that is my experience on Potenzas. At 50 PSI, you must have some crazy understeer-oversteer transition issues.
I don't think you'll ever get the mileage, of say... a TDI VW Jetta, no matter how much you tweak the ECU. But, the S2000 has other advantages over the VW. No?

I noticed no difference with a hardtop.

The best I ever got was 35.1 mpg on a single tank. That was back in 2008
When I drove cross country I averaged 29.06 mpg over 3488 miles (passenger, full trunk and Hard Top)
Since 2009 I have been running an AP2 tranny.

I saw 29 mpg during the freeway portions of a recent 3100 mile trip. Passenger. Full trunk. Soft top up. Air conditioner blasting on full tilt boogie.
Now in the canyons locally... that's a whole different ballgame. I rarely do the math (although I always write down the mileage at each fill up) but the few times that I have taken the time, I kind of chuckled. I think I recall it being in the mid teens.

In local driving, no highway, I 18-20mpg. I can get 27mpg on the highway with the top up, 80mph, on flat/level ground. Best I've ever seen was about 32mpg in hilly terrain (coasting saves fuel) on two lane roads around 50mph.
On the track, more like 7mpg.

I miss the fuel economy on the s2000 terribly. 30 mpg on the highway is normal, I've actually gotten higher on straight highway drives. I used to beat the snot out of the car and drive on highways and averaged around 21-22. Now in my M3 I'm lucky if I get 15mpg mixed....and that's me taking it very light.
The s2000 is an engineering masterpiece. I don't know any other high performance car that gets same mpg as a civic.

The only time I actually paid attention to it was on a trip from Miami to Key West and back. Did something like 330 miles to the tank, mix of highway and city in there and just relaxing...without MPG being on the front of my mind.
