3+ years later, finally nearing that time. choice
Hi All,
Obviously I have been around these boards for a while now without posting much - the reason being that I dont own an S2000. So here's the story: I've been in love with this car since I first saw the prototype before the 2000 model came out and have been reading about it, and wanting it for quite a long time. At 16 years old I spent most of my life savings on an Integra that I have been driving ever since and the car is doing just fine.
Current situation: I am 22 years old, graduated from college with a degree in Computer Science, and working a fine job. The job doesn't pay a ton, but it pays enough for the bills and to live a reasonably comfortable life. I've had the integra for 6 years and it's nearing its 10th birthday, so I really want a new car.
Obviously my #1 choice would be to get the S2000 (used) that i've wanted for so many years. Another option is to get a new WRX that would be much more practical, new, still fun, but (IMO) not as much fun as the S. The third, and most reasonable option would be to keep the Integra for a few more years and just save the money. I have gotten advice from my girlfriend, mom, and friends, but now I want advice from my fellow car nuts who know how bad lust for a new car can get. So here are my options in "reasonable decision" order, which also happen to be the inverse of "what I want" order:
1. Keep the integra, drive it for a few more years, save your money, be sad that I dont have a new car.
2. Buy a WRX, enjoy the car, drive it all-year-round, sell the integra, have a brand spanking new car, have the insurance go up a bit.
3. Buy a used S2000, LOVE the car, drive it only summers, keep the integra for winter, have insurance go way up
What do you guys think? I'm also open to new suggestions, such as maybe a used STi? Also can anyone around my age tell me how bad the insurance is? I'm not even sure if I can afford option 3.
I appreciate your input
edit: wow i've been around here almost 4 years! My how time flies when you're graduating highschool, flying through college, and starting a new job.

DO WHAT YOU HONESTLY FEEL IS MOST COMFORTABLE.
I was the same way. and now got my s and couldnt be more happier.
Think about whats gonna apply to your current lifstyle, but if your comfortable already get the s.
sometimes rahter than asking for advice, do what you want cause you only got one life and what you want in the end is what matters most.
enjoy and im sure ill see you on the boards

I agree, you gotta do what you feel is right. I used to own a 00 prelude type SH and had the option of just paying it off and being debt free or restarting my loan from where i started 2.5 years earlier and gettin an 01 S2k. Now i am back to making loan payments and enjoying every second of it!!! Haven't looked back yet!

Wow, it's amazing how similar our situation is. Sounds like I'm about a year behind you, I finish up college this summer. Still driving the integra and longing for the S2000. Luckily I live in Florida so the S has no problem being a year-round car. It sounds like you need to move somewhere warm!
From reading your options I'd definately say you should throw out option 2. You've obviously wanted the S2000 for a long time and you probably wouldn't be happy with something else.
I went to progressive.com, after hearing all these horror stories about insurance on the S, to get some idea about a quote they would give me. Put in my Integra (1999) and an S2000 (2003), and they quoted a LOWER price for the S2000! You should check that out, atleast you'll get an idea on prices.
Good luck with whatever option you decide to take!

Get a used Miata--lots of fun, reliable, and cheap. When you can comfortably afford a fancier car, get it. I will readily admit that I'm conservative about borrowing money for frivolities; I also will readily admit that the S2000 is a great car. However, this is one of the many places in life where the 80/20 rule applies--you can get a great majority of the fun of an S2000 for a tiny fraction of the cost of an S2000, in a Miata.
If you can afford to spend a great deal more for the extra fun factor, do it! If you can't, save your money, and have as much fun as you can with something you can afford.

GET YOUR S2000!!!
Even YOU admit you've waiting long enough... I think you've already displayed patience and if after all this time you still want the S then get it.
You only live once!!! One day when your driving your luxury sedan you'll think back to the days you were carving the roads and collecting the stares in your legendary S2000......
Don't miss out on this great car...... experience it for yourself!!

If you can manage to wait until you turn 25 to get the S2000 then you'll have a decent amount of money saved up and won't have to worry so much about insurance costs on the S2000. That's what I did, though I was kind of forced to since I couldn't afford a new S2000 when I was 23 and they came out since I was fresh out of school. You just want to make sure that you can definitely afford whatever decision you make. You're the only one that knows the answer to that question.

Buy a new S2000.
Let's face it, at your age, are you really going to save the extra money? No. You're going to blow it on girls, beer, ski trips, what have you.
The closest you're going to come to saving money is to buy a new car, make big payments, and have the car paid off after five years. Then you can drive around without any car payments for five years while you're buying a condo or something.
Besides, no software company is complete without a fancy two seat roadster parked out front.
(Okay, I'm being somewhat facetious, but I had to balance out your mother's opinion.)

Just buy the car you want for christ sakes! You're a big boy with your own paycheck. Blowing it on something totally rediculous and impractical is a right of passage. Grow up and make bad decisions like the rest of us already!
j/k of course. I've never regreted buying mine. Don't be a mama's boy!
