Default 3-4 Misshifts

My first bad misshift, I was redlining 3rd but shifted into 2nd instead. The tires chirped and it hit the rev limited a few times before I could get it into neutral. No check engine light, no white smoke and the car feels fine.

Should I get the engine checked? I searched and found a few stories on this but no 3-2 shifts.

yes. compression leak down test, check valves, and retainers. Cover your bases this can be fixed easily and relatively inexpensively if caught before you drop a valve into your engine.

how inexpensive? Can a home mechanic do this if he has the right tools?

So I shouldn't drive my car until I do the compression test?

Correct. The word around here is that things may seem fine at first but damage probably occurred and will bite you in the ass later. I'm thinking a search on "misshift" should give lots of horror stories on the subject. Hope things aren't bad.

hey good luck, Keep us informed on the outcome either way! Ive just read a lot on the horror stories from a misshift i recently got my 01 and im planning on bringing it in to get it checked as well, my car only has 17k miles on it and was actually "old man" driven before me but i would just like that peace of mind , better safe than sorry

The compression test is not really the recommended action to be taken. Although that and a leakdown test won't hurt, you really need to have the valve covered pulled and have the retainers inspected. Our local s2ki experts have agreed this is the weakpoint that cracks on an over-rev and if its just minorly cracked right now it would show no symptoms until it drops a valve . . . and then its to late and a very expensive fix. Do a search for Billman's posts on checking the retainers and if you are not familiar with what you are looking for check your local forum and see if you can find a shop that deals with s2000's in your area to do the inspection for you. While they are at it they can do a valve adjustment so its money well spent anyway. Probably between $100-150.

Okay thanks for the info.

I still don't understand how come I heard the rev limiter if it was an accidental 3-2 shift. My friend thinks I got locked out of 4th and just hit the limiter in 3rd then it somehow chirped when I got back into 3rd. Does that make any sense?
