2nd-Time Owner: Is Theft Still an Issue?
#14
From all the stories I've heard between s2ki, facebook, and in person, yes theft is most definitely still an issue with our car.
If you have to leave it parked outside for long periods of time, there will always be a much greater risk of theft. And those who have had it broken into, stolen, etc. tend to be the ones who drive the car more often or leave it outside of their garage overnight, but not always!! If I wasn't able to garage it overnight or had to park it on the street in the city on a regular basis, I think I'd go for a different car. Or just realize that at one point or another, the risk of theft would be quite high. Then again, normally someone with a brand new $40,000+ car probably wouldn't want to leave their car on the street too often or overnight sitting outside, and I'd treat it similarly to a more expensive car in that sense.
This isn't to scare you away, but it is reality. The previous owner of my car said he never even drove it to the supermarket for fear of door dings, scratches, etc. While I'm not that bad, I still try to be extremely careful where I park the car and do not always drive it due to parking reasons as I often don't feel safe leaving it parked in the big city.

has anyone ever left a bait car out to catch the thieves in the act? i think that would be a fun way to spend a friday night.
You want to keep your car from being stolen, keep it in a private garage like I do. You can always pull the fuel pump fuse but that gets annoying and it could still be towed away.
i always feel the rage when people talk about their cars getting stolen so i'm going to stop now.
