PDX S2000

Is there any reason not to go with 215/xx and 245/xx tires on the stock rims? I'm going on my third set of tires (bye bye AO32R's) and would really like a little extra bite in the rear.

The oem S02s are essentially 245s in dimension. I am planning to go with 245 A032Rs rears with the next set of wheels I get, be they JDM or Spoon, the latter being wider.

...a 7.5" rim is on the narrow side for 245s, as the tires will tend to pinch and possibly even REDUCE the contact patch.Becauce of this you shall also get more wear toward the center of the tread.So if extra bite is what you're looking for this may not be effective.If you're doing it for looks then...

Race 245s should fit however, as the stiffer sidewalls shall counter-act the pinching effect.

I am very pleased with the 205/55 245/45 A032R's on stock rims.

AutoXers use(or should) RACING rubber and, as I said before,
the stiffer sidewalls REDUCE the pinching effect, but if you refer to ANY good text on high performanceracing handling you get the best results from any given tire by mounting it on the WIDEST rim width in the suggested-rim-width-range.

Which means for example that could get a larger contact patch from a 205 on a wide rim than a 225 on a narrow rim.

It is also noteworthy that rim width has a greater impact upon high performance handling than rim diameter.

I loved my AO32R's, I only had one track event with them though, and after being heat cycled too much from daily driving they started to not be very grippy, in cold weather surely worse than a high performance street tire..? They have to get very warm to really be much better than any other tire I think... The AO32R's are great tires, but I can't afford them for another 6k miles if I am not on the track every day, and I don't have a second set of wheels..

I am also going 205's and 245's, mostly because I am not very talented with RWD =) I also went this route because I'm getting SP8000's... they don't come in a 225/50/16 etc. that I'm aware of, I finally decided the s2000 is just my nice weekend car, and while I want a performance tire, I don't need the best, the SP8000's are almost half the price of SO2's and I've driven a friend's miata that has them and I think they are a superb tire for the money...
