Is 2007 the last year?
The June issue of Road and Track reports that the S2000 will say good-bye the end of this year and a new roadster will be introduced in 2009. The story is reported by editor Sam Mitani. If you read R&T, you know that Sam is Japanese, speaks the language, and travels to Japan often to test new Japanese cars ahead of most of the other car-mags. Sam says the new car will be direct competition for the Miata and priced lower than an S2000. The car will use a Civic motor revamped for RWD configuration.
As a business model, this makes sense. There is almost no market at the S2000 price point. All the competition is in the Miata range and manufacturers are selling many more Skys and Solstices and Miatas than Honda is selling S2000s. Chrysler even has a roadster they plan to introduce at this price point.
Anyway, that's the report. These reports have been wrong before, but this one sounds about right.
