2006 MX-5 Miata or 2006 S2K?
#41
I think if you were to graph it you'd see a very low point from the early 70s (Ralph Nader and safety concerns) until the Miata/MX5 came out in the late eighties. The MX5 reignited the roadster craze that had died out with the MGB.
I read a book once about the guy who pushed for the MX5 and the big risk he took and the opposition he faced. I for one am glad he did.

As many people have already said, you must drive both before you can make an intelligent decision. I test drove the MY03 S2000 and it didn't give me the warm fuzzy feeling I wanted so I waited. I test drove the MY04 S2000 and fell instantly in love with it and bought it. I had the pleasure of attending the mazda tour this past weekend in orlando and I enjoyed driving the new MX-5. It was fully optioned and a nice vehicle. It handled fairly well. I didn't feel as connected to the track as I do with my S. Mazda has improved it's Miata and now it appeals more to men which is probably why you've considered it. The only problem with your comparison is that they aren't in the same class. I'm not a big fan of american cars, but I'd recommend you include the pontiac solstice rather than the S. It seems to be a nicer vehicle than the Miata and they have a comparo in one of the latest Car and Driver magazines.

comparing the miata to the S2000 is like comparing a civic to S2000.
the best thing to remember is... YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. yes the miata is cheaper... and cheaper for a reason.

If things like trunk capacity, # of cupholders, head room, leg room, etc. are important to you then maybe the miata is better for you. The S2k is a little more sports oriented, and the owners of this car use to be real enthusiasts.
Now that it's cheaper, it's more accessible to a bunch of ricers who think of a miata as a civic.

Go get an M3, if you want a fast daily driver.
S2000 can be a pain in the ass to drive daily. I.E. you have to run to a Home Depot. You want to pick up some goodies. Most items will fit in an M3. Anything larger than a duffel bag or two will not fit in an S2000.
S2000 over MX-5?? Well, that just depends on your taste. I prefer Honda over Mazda, but my S2000's 2nd gear synchro makes me wish I had chosen the other. (other any other car, other than this POS.)
Get the M3. If you don't like it, you can always trade down for either S or MX-5.

Hi! Guys, Thanks a lot for all your responses.
I just want to claify few things. I apologize If I confuse some of you
with my my post, I should ve communicated more clearly.
My Priorities:
- I dont need this second car, I only want it for fun and to experiece a
car with good handling.
- Price is not a factor
- Not for touring, not for track only to drive in and around Los angeles
and I will keep it stock
- Daily driver: This is where I confused a lot of people. I am not
looking for luxury, cushy, quiet ride. I want to turn my boring drive to
work into a fun one.
If I needed a four seater, I would have gone for BMW 3-series or M3.
Actually I saved 50% down for 2006 M3. I changed my mind when it
became clear that 2006 is the final year for E46 M3 and the new 3-
series 330Ci Coupe(2007) is closing the gap between 3-series
and M3 (atleast in terms of HP, if not handling)
Instead of waiting for a 2008 E90 M3 , I wanted to buy S2K NOW and
save(invest) the rest of the Money for a future Family car whatever
that will be.
I am not trying to rationalize my desire for S2K. I only wanted some input on new Miata. I asked this question here becuase I dont hangout on Miata forum. Still I have plenty of time before spring to test drive different cars. But my mind is set on S2K. If I dont go it for now, I will never be able to experience that is offered by S2K or similar cars as my priorities will change in a couple of years.
Thanks again.. I will let you know when I get my new ride.
