I looked at the RX8 and asked myself if it would still be cool if it had a piston engine rather than a rotary. The answer was "not really"
When you take away the "cool" factor of having a rotary motor, the car just isnt there in my opinion.
It is, however, a very reliable motor. The old school naturally aspirated rotaries will last forever. Boost blows stuff up because the seals are touchy.

I agree with Ace10, they're entirely different. The RX8 seems more broadly appealing, like it was designed by committee. I can see it now, the meeting has come to order, a dozen or so very bright and creative people are discussing what they would do if given unlimited resources, and the ideas are astonishing...but Mazda management sets restrictions, then Marketing projects sales, and finally Production estimates costs and what was once noble and true is now homogenized, bland, and vaguely Saturnesque. All this because they compremised their first principle---to build an honest and pure sports car (like the RX7 or the S2000)---with their second principle---not offend anybody.

Now that I have a 2003 Saturn ION Quad Coupe as my "winter car" I would never consider a RX-8. At first they were kind of cool -- but they dont have enough space to be a daily driver.

So now I feel I have the best of all worlds - a four door coupe at half the price of an RX-8 and and S2000. Problem solved.

As opposed to a VW Golf I suppose. Not that I have anything against a golf, my wife used to have one.

Heated Recaros?! They must've used the lighter weight seats to make way for the heaters. You know, break even and stuff.
