I just sold my old Nissan Maxima to CarMax...they gave me a very good price for it. (about $1700 over KBB wholesale!) While I was there I looked around at their prices on cars....everything seemed REALLY high to me. I came to the conclusion that CarMax is a great place to sell a car but a terrible place to buy one. Their whole "no-haggling" thing is BS. Their prices are on-par with or above other dealerships and they won't negotiate. Yes they have the whole no-hassle thing going and they guarantee their cars, but I think those are just gimmicks.
IMO, SVT_Chia got ripped off, and so is the car you're looking at. Check the NADA and KBB values. Keep in mind....you can get a BRAND NEW '04 or '05 S2K for around $30-31K if your negotiation skills are good and your timing is right. You'll also most likely get a much better interest rate on a new car than a used one.

And as far as their prices being above what other dealers charge, I personally didn't notice that. They seemed fair and that in combonation with a straight price was fine with me. If another dealer will match their price, I wouldn't be surprised if their trade in was lower or the financing higher. Carmax salespeople get paid $150 per car. Doesn't matter if it's a Metro or a Maserati. Where as at a normal dealer, the more profit they make the dealer the more the salesperson lines their pockets.
Do whatever feels right. I did.

2001 S2k for $24000 - thats not a bad deal actually.
The mileage is low, and if it is MINT, then its a fair price. You can always try to knock the price down as well, as most people do.
I was lucky enough to be able to pick my S2k up at 800 bucks above wholesale price, and if you look around, you might find them as cheap as this. Some person who is trying to sell it fast, basically.
So in my opinion, 24K isn't a rip off, but better deals can be had if you look around. Just be careful with the "too good to be true" deals.

I bought my car from carmax. MY00 back in january for 22.5k. While the car has been mechanically good, here are some things you should look at.
1) Tires - my tires are dunlop SP5000. They are sized as per catalog, which makes the rears too narrow. They also had 20psi of air in them when i checked them the morning after i drove the car home. take a tire gauge.
2) Fluids - Ask them if they have replaced any, get them to show you what they put in the diff and tranny.
3) Ask if spark plugs have been properly torqued to 18 ft-lb.
4) go through your usual used car buying checklist thoroughly.
good luck

Too high IMO.
Bought my 02 in April w/ 11,000 miles on it for $23,500.
I also like the 02 for the rear glass window.
Just my .02

Got my 02 with 12.755 on the odometer. Paid 26K out the door. So minus taxes, registration etc... and I'm about where you're at. Car was in almost mint condition (except for a garage door ding on the rear bumper) and came with 18" OZ's. Bought from a dealer.
So 01 for 24K before taxes, way too much $.

It's not that bad a deal. For some reason Carmax has the GPW priced higher than the other colors. I bought my 01 from them a little over a year ago for 25k with 5200 miles on it. I still think it was a pretty good deal.
Do whetever you can live with.
