I'd get a tune-up. Things need replacement from old age, even if they weren't used much.

My neighbor just bought a 2000 S2000 with 4000 miles on it (yes, 4000 miles -- not a typo). The original owner was some guy who had 25 vehicles and, apparently, money to burn. He drove it for 4000 miles in the first year and then never drove it for 7-8 years and just had his mechanic start the engine and drive it around the block to keep it lubed, keep the tire from getting a flat spot, etc.

The car looks like new. If I didn't know it's a 2000 model year, it could have been a 2009 model year. The original owner had it covered at all times. I looked at the underbody and it's like a dealer car. It is basically a 2000 model year car driven for 4000 miles and then stored for 7-8 years.

My neighbor is thinking about selling it for what he bought it for two months ago -- $16,200 -- because he's unsure about his job. I checked Autotrader and the price seems good.

What, if anything, should I be concerned about on a 2000 S2000 with such low mileage? Any other thoughts about this vehicle?

Thanks.
Hey am I the only one that thinks if this is the real deal WOW! Obviously do some do diligents and have it checked like any used car but DAMN! Buy that car!! I have a MY00 with 59K and love it. If you can get one with 4k miles, I almost cant even type a number that low for a MY00, on it I would take it in a heart beat. Change all the fluids put some new rubber on that thing put a UK alignment in it and drive the hell out of it. Hell if you dont want it PM me and I will take it.

Dont you think that a mechanic would know that after several years of setting the car would need the fluids changed? I would assume that along with the lube and drive the mechanic changed the fluids possibly the tires given how long it was in the garage and the fact that the owner must have been pretty well off.

+1. That's a very good deal for the mileage.

OP isn't asking if it is a good price. OP wants to know what to look for as for common issues and having a car parked for so long.

That man must've treated that S2K like a supercar. 4,000 miles on a MY00? That's crazy.

Great find! In addition to suggestions so far, I'd replace all the rubber on the car, tubing, bushings, etc. Rubber will degrade in the atmosphere over time. Run a check on the battery. Wouldn't want to get stranded in the museum piece. You might want to treat the leather before it gets too much use if it feels dried out.

You have to factor in the cost of changing the fluids and (expensive) tires, which will bump your OTD price (before tax and license) to about $17k. Then, you gotta see how much a 4000 mile 2008 S2000 is and how much a brand new S2000 is. The difference in price is to pay what you are essentially giving up by taking a 8-year old model: newer technology, torquier more HP engine (see dyno comparison between AP2 vs. AP1), ashtetic enhancements over the years, better diff, rear speakers, glass window, 17" wheels, VCS, WARRANTY, etc.. Then, you gotta think if the saving is worth it.

I'm in the minority here. I don't think so, unless you are trying to keep it in mint condition as a collector's item
