NFR_not to argue with you but there are many different options when it come to purchasing paint.Not to say you are wrong about the s paint .But you can get what they call single stage which requires no clear to shine , or a basecoat clearcoat which is a 2 stage process.

Oh, and I dont like to argue either, but you are very incorrect about purchasing paint. The only option you have is color. Not stages or how many coats of clear you want.
If you want to see unclearcoated paint, look at an old 80s american car.....see the shine?? Exactly, there isnt one.

Acrylic, REAL hardner (not the crap the dealers say they apply) and laquer are all forms of clearcoat. Clearcoat is basically a seal that is well...umm....clear and protects the real color pigment. The waterproofing that you use on your deck is basically a different type of clearcoat.
Next, like I said before. Skilled painters can do wonders with paint. Agreed. However, paint without any kind of laquer or clearcoat PHYSICALLY cannot shine. It does not have any reflective properties. All the showcars that have paint you can swim in have about 13 or more layers of clearcoat, and many stages of paint.
Again, I dont want to insult anyone nor knock their opinions. I am simply stating facts that I know.

I'm sorry, that is not right - the lacquers, acrylics, and enamels we have used were also the color coat. They are termed single-stage paints as a result. Applying a color over a primer is not a clear coat, at least in the car circles I know. Maybe that's what they are called where you live.

Hardener is not a form of clearcoat at all .It is 1 part of a 2 part mix .It is used to activate the clear or basecoat into hardening .Like two part epoxy or fiberglass and HARDENER
It creates a cemical reation to cure or harden the medium you are using ( Paint, bondo , fiberglass or epoxy resin for carbonfiber)

What I meant was, any sealant for paint is refered to as clearcoat. For wood its laquer or shelaque (sp???), for cars its a spray, etc......
I never said anything about applying color over primer would make it look like clearcoat.
