I've only had my car since yesterday but I feel like first gear pulls really hard and I don't even shift into second until about 6k and that gets up on me pretty quick even while driving conservatively.

Not sure what you mean by "tight" or "loose" for gearing, can you explain more what you mean?

The effect is in your head. It's because you don't start accelerating out of any other gear starting at 1k rpm like you do in 1st. When you first take off in 1st, you have several thousand RPMs where you're making no power. This doesn't happen on shifts to any other gear.
